Description/Duties and Responsibilities
The City of Santa Clarita is currently recruiting a part-time, temporary, and seasonal (PTS) team member to join the Urban Forestry team within the Administrative Services department. Under supervision, this position will assist in the maintenance and care of trees throughout the City.
This position is expected to work 15-25 hours per week with a varied schedule between the hours of 7:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Monday -Friday. Hours are dependent on the needs of the Urban Forestry team.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepares and plants trees along City rights-of-way, trails, and parks
- Removes weeds from tree wells and along city right of way, including medians
- Assists staff with pruning, removing, and stump grinding of City-maintained trees
- Uses hand tools such as shovels, picks, loppers, tree pruners, etc.
- Uses power equipment, including, but not limited to, weed-whippers, chain saws, and chippers
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Valid Class C California Driver License with a safe driving record
- A minimum of six months experience in a maintenance field (for example: landscape maintenance, tree maintenance, grounds maintenance, etc.)
- Experience with trailer towing is highly desirable
Knowledge and Abilities
- Knowledge of tree care, landscape/grounds maintenance, and small power equipment usage
- Ability to follow proper safety protocol and pay strict attention to safety at all times
- Ability to operate various small power tools
- Ability to maintain professionalism and exhibit good judgment in difficult situations
- Positive work ethic, proactive, and the ability to learn quickly
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Strong team player and the ability to work both independently and as part of a work group
- Basic computer skills and the ability to access or respond to service requests
- Strong customer service skills and the ability to interact with members of the public professionally and tactfully
- Ability to lift, carry, and push tools, equipment, and supplies weighing 50 pounds or more
- The ability to perform physical labor, bending, and squatting, as well as working outdoors and in inclement weather

In addition, part-time, temporary, and seasonal (PTS) employees may be required to participate in the DMV Employer Pull-Notice Program. This program authorizes the City to receive a driver record report upon enrollment and during employment.
This is not a designated Retired Annuitant position. If you are a California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) retiree, you may be required to reinstate into CalPERS.
Part-time, temporary, and seasonal (PTS) workers are at-will. Generally, PTS employees are limited to no more than 999 hours.
