Under the direction of an administrator or manager, performs routine custodial activities at an assigned campus site or facility; maintains buildings and adjacent ground areas in a clean, orderly, and secure condition.

  • Performs routine custodial activities at an assigned campus site or facility; sweeps, scrubs, mops, strips, waxes, and polishes floors; vacuums rugs and carpets in classrooms, offices, workshops, and other work areas; spot cleans and shampoos carpets. *
  • Cleans classrooms, cafeterias, gymnasiums, auditoriums, lounges, offices, locker rooms, hallways, and other facilities as assigned; dusts and polishes furniture and woodwork; empties waste receptacles; spot mops spills; removes gum, debris, and graffiti as needed. *
  • Operates custodial equipment such as vacuums, mops, small hand and power tools, buffer/scrubber machines, and other equipment as assigned; operates a forklift as assigned by the position; may drive a vehicle to conduct work. *
  • Cleans and disinfects drinking fountains and restroom facilities, including sinks, toilets, and urinals; fills dispensers with towels, soap, toilet paper and other items; washes mirrors, tile, walls, and windows; unclogs drains and toilets. *
  • Picks up paper and other debris from campus grounds, walkways, and areas, adjacent to campus facilities; sweeps concrete surfaces adjacent to campus buildings; plows snow from roads and walkways; spreads ice-melt on walkways as required. *
  • Replaces light bulbs and tubes; cleans boards, trays, and erasers; empties pencil sharpeners; cleans tables, chairs, and floors. *
  • Prunes and irrigates flowers, trees, grass, and shrubs as assigned by the position; picks up debris following assigned tasks; uses blower to clean path of travel at building entrances and walkways. *
  • Locks and unlocks doors, gates, and windows as appropriate; turns lights on and off as needed; maintains security of assigned areas according to established guidelines; sets alarms as appropriate. *
  • Moves and arranges furniture and equipment; prepares classrooms, gymnasiums, and other facilities for special events or meetings as assigned; sets up and assembles chairs, tables, and other furniture and equipment; cleans up furniture, equipment, and debris following these events. *
  • Reports safety, sanitary, and fire hazards to appropriate personnel; reports needs for maintenance and repairs to appropriate authority. *
  • Participates in the thorough cleaning and restoration of campus facilities during vacation periods. *
  • Sanitizes areas assigned after identified COVID-19 case. *
  • Handles emergency operations after hours - Cal Safety communication for campus alarms. *
  • Performs related duties that support the overall objective of the position.
  • High School Diploma or GED AND
  • At least one (1) year of related work experience OR
  • Any combination of education and experience which would provide the required the required qualifications for the position.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two (2) years of working experience performing custodial work for a public agency or educational institution.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • May be required to possess or demonstrate an ability to obtain a valid driver's license, if driving is required as an essential responsibility of the position.
  • May be required to travel for various off-site meetings, trainings, conferences, workshops, and/or events in supports of the overall objective of the position.

  • Requirements of maintaining buildings in a safe, clean, and orderly condition.
  • Appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
  • Proper lifting techniques.
  • Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
  • Operation of computers, software programs and applications, and hardware peripherals.
  • Mathematic calculations.
  • Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) to access District email, communications, and/or work orders.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this classification, employees are regularly required to sit or stand for extended periods of time; talk or hear, in person and by telephone; use hands repetitively to finger, handle, feel, operate personal computers and other standard office equipment; and reach with hands and arms; bend at the waist, kneel, or crouch to file materials; requires manual and finger dexterity to write and to clean and make minor repairs; twist and turn head and trunk to clean and to remove trash; move furniture and equipment; requires sufficient hearing and speech for ordinary, telephonic, and 2-way radio communication to hear sound prompts from equipment and to determine if equipment is functioning properly; must be able to function effectively indoors and outdoors engaged in work of primarily an active nature; maintain cardiovascular fitness to engage in strenuous physical labor.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, ability to distinguish basic shades and colors, and the ability to adjust focus; requires near visual acuity to write, read directions and product labels, and to observe work in progress.

Employees are frequently required to walk and stand and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis (1-100 times per day).

While performing the duties of this classification, incumbents are regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; read and interpret data information, and documents; use math and mathematical reasoning; analyze and solve problems; learn and apply new information and skills; perform highly detailed work under changing intensive deadlines on multiple, concurrent tasks; and interact with District administration, management, staff, students, vendors, the public, elected officials, and others encountered in the course of work, some of whom may be dissatisfied or disruptive.

Employees' work is performed indoors and outdoors in weather extremes where significant health and safety considerations exist from physical labor, working with hazardous chemicals, tools, and mechanical equipment; incumbents in this classification may encounter frequent interruptions during the course of work; noise levels may vary depending on activities performed; drives a vehicle to conduct work; handles materials that include waste and blood borne pathogens; frequent exposure to dust, loud noise and/or vibrations.

SELECTION PROCESS

After the preliminary screening, selected candidates will be invited to the campus for an initial interview with the Search Committee. Videoconference interviews (in lieu of an in-person initial interview) will be offered. Candidates to be interviewed will be selected from applicants who most closely meet the minimum and desired qualifications. Meeting the minimum qualifications does not guarantee an interview. The Search Committee will recommend finalists to the Superintendent/President for a final interview.

The District reserves the right to re-advertise the position or to delay indefinitely filling of the position if it is deemed that applicants for the position do not constitute an adequate applicant pool or if funding is not available.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Employees must satisfy all the pre-employment requirements prior to appointment that include, but are not limited to, tuberculosis clearance (EC 87408.6), fingerprint processing, and verification of their legal right to work in the United States. A pre-employment physical examination may be required.
