The Junior Custodian is responsible for daily cleaning of assigned areas and maintaining a safe and clean environment throughout the school building and grounds. They will also prepare and break down school facilities for numerous School or rental events and activities. The Junior Custodian must maintain good relationships with all building stakeholders and report any building deficiencies to their Supervisor.
REPORTS TO: Building Principal, however daily supervision will be provided by the Maintenance and Facilities Director as well as the Senior Building Custodian.
Duties include but are not limited to the following. Additions and modifications to these representative duties and responsibilities are under the purview of the Superintendent of Schools, the Principal, and the Maintenance and Facilities Director.
- Assumes responsibility for the opening and closing the building each day and for determining, upon leaving, that all doors and windows are secured and that the alarm system is in working order.
- Prepares facility for daily operations as may be required for the purpose of ensuring facilities are operational and safe for occupancy (Disarm intrusion alarms, turn on lights/HVAC, open windows, unlock doors/gates, raise flags, sweep/shovel/remove/salt snow from walkways and doorways, etc.).
- Secures facilities and grounds daily for the purpose of maintaining a safe and secure environment, minimizing property damage, equipment loss, etc. (e.g. lock doors, arm intrusion alarm, shut off lights, takes down flags, etc.)
- Performs snow removal operations and operates associated equipment as needed to insure safe walkways and parking lots.
- Performs custodial duties in accordance with industry standards, including daily routines, building maintenance and summer cleaning.
- Cleans assigned areas, using designated cleaning products, hand tools, and power equipment (e.g. Floor machines, burnishers, auto-scrubbers, vacuum cleaners, carpet extractors, grounds equipment and vertical personnel lifts) as directed and instructed by the Department of Public Facilities.
- Performs scheduled duties such as sweeping floors and stairways; washing, waxing and polishing; cleaning and dusting certain furniture; emptying waste and recycling containers and cleaning restrooms.
- Maintains supplies and equipment (e.g. cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuum, mops, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items required to properly stock facilities.
- Mops classrooms and offices, (wet or dry as needed) and dusts furniture.
- Vacuums carpeted areas daily.
- Cleans corridors and stairs after school daily and during work hours when the conditions require.
- Keeps all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation, including gymnasiums.
- Scrubs, hoses down, and disinfects toilet floors daily and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.
- Checks all towel, tissue, and soap dispensers and refills as necessary.
- Washes all windows per cleaning schedule.
- Replaces light bulbs and ceiling tiles as needed.
- Performs maintenance such as painting, installation of equipment such as cork and white boards, maps, and flags and assists maintenance staff as determined by Supervisor.
- Complies with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste.
- Moves furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities as directed by Supervisor.
- Remains on school premises during school hours except during official breaks and during non-school hours when authorized use of the building and attendance is required by the Director, Principal or Supervisor.
- Reports all repairs or needs for building maintenance, as well as vandalism damage or school property to Director.
- Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment and requisitions needed replacements in a timely manner.
- Inspects fire extinguishers for charge level and notifies the Director if there is a problem.
- Performs miscellaneous duties such as setting up tables and chairs for special events, providing direction and answering basic questions regarding events for patrons.
- Maintains grounds area around schools. Sweeps walks and steps, trims bushes, cuts lawn, removes litter from grounds, etc.
- Completes daily checklist.
- Attends and participates in scheduled department and district meetings related to their individual jobs.
- Other duties as assigned by the Principal, Maintenance and Facilities Director, or Superintendent.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School diploma, GED or equivalent or sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and ability listed on this job description.
- Valid MA driver's license preferred.
- Satisfactory State and Federal background checks.
- Demonstrated knowledge and expertise in modern cleaning methods including basic methods for cleaning carpets, floors, restrooms, walls, furniture and fixtures.
- Working knowledge of cleaning chemicals, supplies, and equipment and safety practices used in custodial work.
- Ability to use and maintain equipment such as automatic floor cleaning machines, vacuums, carpet extractors, lawn mowers, mops, brooms, shovels, snow blowers, small hand tools, ladders, personnel lifts, and miscellaneous other cleaning tools and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
- Possess basic computer skills, including ability to perform simple word processing, request supplies and services, send/receive email, and availability to access the internet programs, or willingness and ability to be trained on such items.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills with fluency in writing, speaking and reading English.
- Preferred candidate will also be fluent in reading, writing and speaking one of the following: Spanish, Portuguese or Arabic representative of our community.
- Ability to perform basic math, understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and understand multi-step written and oral instructions.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast paced environment while meeting schedules and timelines, exercise sound judgement, and work well under pressure.
- Outstanding interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and respect for others with ability to establish rapport with and relate to students, families and co-workers with respect, compassion, tact and understanding.

- Visual acuity and ability to move freely throughout the premises to perform the above duties (eg climb stairs/ladders, stand for long durations, walk continuously,) and to bend, reach, carry, push, pull and lift up to 50 lbs of materials and equipment.

SCHEDULE & COLLECTIVE BARGAINING UNIT
This is a full time 40 hour per week, 12 month position. Schedule, salary, and benefits will be determined by the AFSCME Collective Bargaining Agreement. This is an 8 hour shift, Monday through Friday (including a 1 hour unpaid lunch) schedule between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Your specific schedule will be assigned to you by the Maintenance and Facilities Director.
