POSITION SUMMARY:

This position reports to a Custodial Supervisor. The main responsibility of this position is to provide a clean, safe and healthy environment for the building users.

The person in this position will have an assigned area for which they will be primarily responsible. Duties will include, but are not limited to, cleaning restrooms, offices, classrooms/labs, and public areas and require performing physical labor including lifting up to 50 lbs., turning, stooping, bending and twisting. The position requires using tools, supplies, equipment, etc. and working with power cleaning equipment (vacuum cleaners, carpet extractors, floor buffers, automatic floor scrubbers, etc.) Work is performed in areas occupied by students, faculty and staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Ensure routine custodial maintenance is completed.

Maintain classrooms and labs through cleaning floors, blackboards, erasers; replacing chalk; straightening furniture; removing trash and recycling; cleaning receptacles, furniture, glass, doors, walls, and other surfaces. Maintain restrooms, shower rooms, and locker rooms through cleaning and disinfecting floors, sinks, stools, and urinals; replenishing products; removing trash; cleaning and disinfecting receptacles, walls, doors, partitions, and other surfaces. Maintain hallways, stairwells, and entries through cleaning of floors; cleaning and disinfecting fountains; cleaning walls, handrails, doors, glass, and other surfaces; machine buffing as necessary. Maintain offices and lounges through cleaning of floors; straightening furniture; removing trash; cleaning receptacles, furniture, glass, doors, walls, and other surfaces. Maintain special use areas (auditoriums, gymnasiums, observatories, theatres, etc.) through cleaning floors, fixtures, furniture; removing trash; cleaning receptacles, glass, doors, walls, and other surfaces. Provide instruction and oversight to student employees assigned to building to ensure tasks are completed. Maintain outside entry areas through the removal of snow, litter, leaves, etc. Remove trash and recyclables from and maintain receptacles in common areas.

  1. Plan and perform periodic project work.

Perform major periodic cleaning projects such as window and wall washing; floor scrubbing, stripping, buffing and waxing; carpet extraction, pressure spraying, etc. Assist with the planning of all periodic project work in assigned areas which may include working with faculty and staff. Test, evaluate and recommend new products, equipment and procedures.

  1. Perform miscellaneous duties.

Recommend repairs through the work order system or call the Facilities Management Office in emergency situations. Follow up to make sure repairs are completed correctly. Perform minor repairs and routine maintenance of custodial equipment including replacement of vacuum bags and brushes, cleaning of filters, etc. Maintain clean appearance of equipment as well as function by cleaning equipment thoroughly inside and out after each use. Monitor condition of equipment, submitting work orders as needed. Discuss concerns with lead worker. Perform minor building and furniture repair including replacement of light bulbs and chair tips, tightening of fasteners, etc. Support waste minimization efforts on campus by working with leads to recommend or implement different processes for trash and recycling collections, as well as other universal and hazardous wastes. Maintain custodial closets and carts in a clean and organized manner to ensure items are on hand when and where they are needed. Maintain proper storage of products and universal waste (ie. Lightbulbs) for safety compliance. Perform event set-ups, teardowns, furniture moves, etc. Attend meetings, seminars, safety training, equipment trainings, product trainings, etc. Perform other custodial or maintenance duties, as assigned.

  • Maintains organization of supply areas and equipment, documents inventory, and requests additional supplies as needed
  • Documents and reports repairs, violations, and pest control needs
  • Utilizes basic equipment and supplies to clean assigned facility areas and remove waste and recyclables
  • Maintains clean and clear walkways to ensure they are free of debris, litter, snow, and ice
  • Monitors and secures facility interior and exterior entrances and reports issues to appropriate entities

Required Qualifications:

  • Use or learn to use cleaning and miscellaneous chemicals.

  • Understand and follow verbal and/or written work orders, instructions, product labels, policies, etc.

  • Work independently or as part of a group.

  • Perform manual labor including frequent lifting of up to 50 pounds or more., turning, stooping, bending and twisting.

  • Climb and work on ladders and scaffolding to perform duties such as replacing light bulbs, cleaning light fixtures, cleaning ledges, walls and ceilings, etc.

  • Pass essential job function screening.
