IGNACIO SCHOOL DISTRICT BUILDING CUSTODIAN

The Building Custodian is responsible to maintain a clean and safe building and grounds. This person helps set up for different events or activities and make sure the building is secured at night.

QUALIFICATIONS

1. High school diploma or equivalent.

2. Light maintenance and housekeeping experience preferred.

3. Self-motivated.

4. Able to run custodial machinery including: high and low speed buffers, carpet extractors, carpet shampooers.

5. Able to do minor repairs: carpentry, plumbing and electrical.

6. Valid driver’s license.

7. Ability to work in harmony with other people.

8. Ability to relate well with students.

RESPONSIBILITIES The Building Custodian’s responsibilities include:

1. Maintaining a clean appearance of the building by removing marks from walls, dirt and paper from floors; dust furniture, lockers and equipment; clean windows and paint on a regular summer schedule. Picking up and removing trash from grounds. 2. Keeping hallways, classrooms swept, vacuumed or mopped on a daily schedule. Removing classroom and office area trash daily.

3. Keeping drinking fountains cleaned and disinfecting toilets and sinks daily.

4. Keeping paper goods stocked a minimum of once daily.

5. Setting up and taking down tables in the cafeteria; sweeping and mopping floors daily; dumping trash and removing debris after every meal function and dumping garbage in kitchen and lifting heavy items.

6. Cleaning gyms after each use; sweeping daily and mopping as necessary; removing trash beneath and on bleachers; cleaning bleachers once a month during heavy use season, more often if necessary; checking bleachers once a month for safety features (tightening or repairing bolts, repairing splinters). Sweeping and emptying trash in locker/ shower room and disinfecting daily.

7. Keeping storage areas in a safe and organized condition.

8. Reading and following manufacturers’ instructions for effective, efficient and economical use of cleaning supplies and equipment.

9. Monitoring proper heat and ventilation, checking periodically throughout each day, especially during inclement weather. Reporting problems to the maintenance department as soon as possible.

10. Assisting the principal in scheduling and conducting one fire drill per semester and checking the operation of alarm system.

11. Opening building at scheduled times and as directed by the building principal or superintendent; closing building and doing a full walk around security check at the end of the day.

12. Setting up and dismantling for special programs.

13. Responding to after-hours emergencies via the call list.

14. Checking playground equipment monthly for safety and maintaining when necessary.

15. Maintaining walkways in a safe condition and removing snow when necessary.

16. Maintaining security lighting (lamp replacement).

17. Picking up and delivering interoffice mail and packages daily.

18. Completing work requests in a timely manner as abilities permit.

19. Performing other duties as may be assigned by the Maintenance Director, building principal or superintendent. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS The Building Custodians’ physical requirements include:

1. Normal physical strength and endurance for standing, sitting, bending or walking.

2. Work assignments are normally located in a work environment with light physical work and requires light physical effort.

3. Ability to lift 50 pounds and carry 25 pounds objects.

REPORTS TO : The Maintenance Director/building principal.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 261 days, eight hours per day, with holidays and vacation.
