The City of San Bernardino is seeking dedicated individuals to join our Temporary Staffing program for the Public Works Department!

Help create welcoming, safe, and well-maintained spaces for the public and your fellow City employees. If you take pride in cleanliness, believe in the value of public service, and want to continue growing your career in a supportive environment, this is your chance to make a daily difference behind the scenes.

About the City:

As a future member of our team, you'll be joining a city with deep roots, cultural diversity, and exciting momentum. Located in the heart of Southern California's Inland Empire, San Bernardino is the county seat and largest city in San Bernardino County, home to more than 222,000 residents. Its rich history - shaped by Native American, Mexican, and Spanish influences - continues to inspire the city's evolving identity.

San Bernardino offers access to major transit corridors, natural beauty, and a wide range of housing and lifestyle options. It's a place where public service careers are supported by a strong sense of community and purpose - and where motivated professionals can grow, contribute, and be part of something meaningful.

About the Position:

As a Custodian in the Public Works or Facilities Division, you'll play a key role in maintaining the cleanliness and appearance of City buildings, offices, and public spaces. Your responsibilities will include sweeping, mopping, dusting, sanitizing restrooms, setting up meeting rooms, and performing minor maintenance tasks to support events and daily operations.

You'll work independently or as part of a team to ensure buildings are clean, secure, and ready for use - whether it's a busy community center, an administrative office, or a public service facility. This hands-on role is ideal for someone who enjoys physical work, takes initiative, and values the satisfaction of a job well done.

San Bernardino Temporary Staffing Assignments:

SBTS employees are hired for departments requesting and anticipating temporary assistance. SBTS employees are temporary, at-will employees and their assignments can be terminated at any time, with or without cause. SBTS employment can be at a full-time or part-time basis, and cannot exceed a term of six (6) months. Employees are expected to complete the duration of the assignment. SBTS employees may be required to drive on City business and must meet all vehicle and safety requirements before authorization is given to operate a City or personal vehicle while on City business. SBTS employees must submit and complete all required documents and have a valid driver's license. Assignments requiring a commercial license will have to adhere to the Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requirements.

The Ideal Candidate:

The ideal candidate is a reliable and self-motivated individual who takes pride in keeping workspaces clean, safe, and presentable. You're someone who understands the importance of custodial work in supporting public services and has a strong attention to detail when it comes to cleaning, organizing, and maintaining facilities.

You enjoy working with your hands, can follow directions with minimal supervision, and are comfortable working both independently and as part of a team. You take safety seriously, communicate well with others, and are flexible when plans change or tasks vary from day to day.

In addition, you'll bring:

  • A basic knowledge of cleaning techniques, tools, and chemicals

  • A strong work ethic and commitment to punctuality and dependability

  • A customer service mindset when interacting with staff and the public

  • The physical stamina to complete tasks like lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods

  • A willingness to support special events and respond to urgent custodial needs

A Day in the Life Consists Of:

  • Arriving early to unlock and open assigned buildings, ensuring a clean and ready environment for the day

  • Sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and sanitizing restrooms and common areas

  • Replenishing supplies such as paper towels, soap, and toilet paper in restrooms

  • Performing minor maintenance or reporting larger facility issues to appropriate staff

  • Setting up tables, chairs, and equipment for meetings, trainings, or events

  • Responding to last-minute requests for cleanup or adjustments during the workday

  • Taking care of outside grounds by sweeping entryways or hosing down sidewalks as needed

  • Ensuring all areas are secure and locked at the end of your shift

No two days are exactly the same - your efforts directly contribute to the health, comfort, and functionality of City facilities used by both employees and the public.
