Job Summary
Under immediate supervision, this position is responsible for general and routine semi-skilled and skilled heavy and manual street, grounds, landscape, custodial and building maintenance work for the City. This weekend position must work a flexible varying schedule, to include Saturday, Sunday, mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Duties and Responsibilities
Essential duties may include, but are not limited to: perform street, grounds, landscaping, and building maintenance; general and routine repairs and custodial maintenance tasks on City owned and leased facilities and equipment; sweep, mop, strip, wax, vacuum, shampoo and polish floors; vacuum, dust and polish woodwork, fixtures, and equipment; wash windows, walls, mirrors, doors, and lavatories; empty and clean trash containers; maintain, clean, sanitize lavatories; refill and restock dispensers and supplies; clean alleys and parkways; perform graffiti removal and abatement; weed abatement; fill pot holes; clean and service equipment and drainage system; paint surfaces and curb markings; paint, patch and repair a variety of surfaces; participates in community neighborhood clean-up activities; operates a pick-up truck or similar light equipment; operates hand, power and heavy equipment related to maintenance; clean-up work sites upon completion of jobs; assist with routine maintenance of parks, grounds, and recreation areas watering, weeding, planting, and trash pick-up; assist with the repair and maintenance of streets, curbs, gutters, driveways, sidewalks, and storm drains; assists with routine plumbing, electrical, and carpentry maintenance and repair; sets out cones, signs, barricades and flags at work sites for safety purposes and to secure from traffic; completes and maintain log of work performed and may prepare records to note facility conditions and equipment use; performs custodial duties at City facilities; lock and secure buildings; and performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of experience and education that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required combination would be: Graduation from high school or its equivalent AND one (1) year of building or street maintenance work. Specialized training in maintenance or a related field is desirable. Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License, Certificate of Automobile Insurance for Personal Liability and satisfactory driving record is required. Possession of or ability to obtain a valid California Class B Driver's License is desirable. Incumbents in this position are subject to enrollment in the California DMV Pull Notice Program.
Knowledge of:
Methods, practices, materials, tools, and equipment relative to carpentry, electrical, plumbing, appliance, irrigation, street maintenance, street maintenance, landscaping, painting, and custodial work; safe and proper use of supplies, tools, chemicals and equipment required; safety standards and work practices; graffiti abatement concepts, techniques, equipment and supplies; occupational hazards and safety guidelines; hand tools, vehicles, and heavy or light equipment; principles and practices of personal computers and related software; and excellent customer service.
Ability to:
Perform unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance work; follow maintenance and custodial safety rules, regulations and practices; clean and maintain buildings and facilities; use a variety of maintenance tools and equipment safely; work independently; exercise appropriate judgement; generate and maintain accurate work records; understand maintenance activities and observe safety rules; identify and solve maintenance problems and tasks; operate a computer and related software; operate a vehicle and maintain a valid California Class C Driver's license with DMV; maintain inventory of supplies and materials; communicate clearly and concisely, orally, and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. On a continuous basis, walk and stand going in and out of buildings; intermittently bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist to perform maintenance activities; drive; wear protective gear and work with chemical solutions, harsh, toxic substances; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; lift or carry 75 pounds or less; subject to frequent interruptions, public contact and moderate noise levels, working indoors and outdoors in increment weather.
