ABOUT THIS POSITION
The Phoenix Arts and Culture Department supports, champions, and promotes the City's arts, culture, and educational community to make Phoenix a great place to live, work, and visit. The department manages an award-winning public art program, grants funds to artists and nonprofit arts organizations; oversees a dozen cultural facilities, promotes arts learning for youth; professional development opportunities for arts administrators and individual artists; and participates in national studies and research that make a strong case for the arts and demonstrate their economic, social, practical, and educational benefits.
As a Groundskeeper in the Arts and Culture Department, you will help care for and maintain cultural facilities, landscaped grounds, archaeological areas, and historic well sites. This position is responsible for a variety of custodial, maintenance, and landscaping duties, ensuring these unique spaces remain safe, clean, and welcoming for the public. Work may include mowing, trimming, planting, weeding, and general upkeep of landscaped areas, as well as cleaning and maintaining building exteriors, walkways, and outdoor gathering spaces. You will operate landscaping equipment, power tools, and other gas-powered machinery as needed to complete assignments. Groundskeepers in this role work both independently and as part of a team, supporting projects across multiple sites. The work is hands-on, outdoors, and may involve varied tasks depending on the season and the needs of each location
The temporary position is intended for the duration of the fiscal year. This position will be funded through June 30,2026 with a possibility to be made regular in a future budget cycle. The temporary position will have benefits but will not earn city retirement credits or participate financially in the city's retirement program. If the successful candidate is a current City employee, all benefits will still be applicable, and the employee will still contribute to their pension. Temporary positions are not covered under civil service rules, and thus employment is considered at-will and employees may be separated at any time.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
- Ability to learn proper cleaning, maintenance, and gardening methods, as well as the safe use of related materials and equipment, including mowers, string trimmers, gas-powered hand shears, pole saws, and other power tools.
- Ability to work in a team environment and/or autonomously.
- Ability to professionally communicate information to Arts and culture staff and guests.
- Ability to identify safety hazards and report them in timely matter.
SALARY
Pay Range: $18.16 - $26.83 per hour.
Hiring Range: $18.16 - $23.18 per hour.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be willing and able to learn the functions of a Groundskeeper such as:
- Be dependable and able to actively learn and perform manual labor and physical tasks for a full shift of eight hours or more.
- Working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, holidays and evenings may be required.
- Moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds may be required.
- Requires working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.
- Requires walking for prolonged periods which may include walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces.
- Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
- All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
- This position requires the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:
- Experience with using power tools Tree trimmer, blower, line Trimmer etc.
- Experience with irrigation systems including xeriscape
- Experience using hand tools and manual landscaping tool (hula hoe, rake, shovel etc.)
- Experience with janitorial cleaning ( using cleaning chemicals, brooms, mops, etc.)
