Primary Purpose

Responsible for the food preparation of a variety of nutritional dishes to meet the needs of the students as established by the Federal Child Nutrition Program. Maintain established standards of quality set by food service policy and safety practices.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED (Preferred)
  • Must have a valid driver's license/ID
  • Current Food Handlers Card or obtain one within 30 days
  • Must have 1 year experience in a food service setting
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment with constant changes and interruptions
  • Ability to read, write and follow oral and written instructions in English
  • Possess strong communication and organizational skills

Experience

One (1) year experience as a cook (Preferred)

Major Responsibilities and Duties

  • Prepare and serve a variety of main dishes and sides in a large quantity and understand food production terminology and methods
  • Follow standardized recipes and adjust per desired yield
  • Able to make changes when applicable but limited to not changing the nutritional value of the meal
  • Ensures the quality and presentation of food items according to the highest standards by tasting food to ensure palatability according to Texas Public School Nutrition Policy
  • Must know the required temperatures for all food products
  • Record amount of food prepared, left over, stored, and dispose of food properly
  • Inspect, clean, and sanitize equipment and work area properly

Job Expectations:

  • Establish and maintain good rapport with students, parents, public and the district staff
  • Attendance, punctuality, and proper grooming are important to meet essential functions in the workplace
  • Assumes, creates, and promotes teamwork and a positive professional code of ethics
  • Utilizes materials, equipment, and time wisely
  • Practice and promote portion control and proper use of leftovers
  • Follows safety standards of meal preparations, servings, storing and disposing of all products
  • Assist with food and non-food deliveries and their proper storage
  • Perform other job duties as assigned to help support district/department goals
  • Complete all proper trainings required by the district/department

Other

  • Placing orders according to the menus
  • Complete production records
  • Check and complete all temperature logs
  • Assign kitchen duties
  • Ensure all meal counts have been received and entered properly
  • Check all deliveries
  • Verifies that all students are getting the required meals
  • Other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities

Will assume the duties of the cafeteria manager when absent

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors

  • Able to multitask while working under pressure and with frequent interruptions and changes
  • Able to lift, carry, push/pull up to 50 pounds
  • Frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and climbing
  • Moderate exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures
  • Able to use different equipment such as electric slicers, mixers, pressure steamers, sharp cutting tools, ovens, dishwashers, computers, cash registers, etc.
  • Works around machinery, moving parts, solvents, grease, fumes, hazardous materials, etc.

Primary Location: Elementary School

Child Nutrition Pay Plan/Pay Grade 3

Starting Hourly Rate: $17.17

Shift Type: Full-Time

Term of Employment: 187 days
