Job Description
PRIMARY PURPOSE
Custodial work in and around schools; supervision of junior custodial staff Establish and
follow routine cleaning and maintenance procedures to maintain a high level of cleanliness,
safety, and efficiency of school buildings.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The essential functions or duties listed below are indicative of the various types of work
performed. The omission of specific statements or duties does not exclude them from the
posit/on if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.
Under general supervision of the Manager of Custodial Services, supervise and perform custodial and general building maintenance duties at the Brookline Public Schools.
Lead and instruct custodial staff directly, or as directed by the Manager of Custodial Services.
Assign duties and work schedules to subordinates.
Exercise leadership skills and good judgment in supervision of subordinates and
interaction with school occupants, including staff, visitors, students and/or the general public.
Directly responsible for cleaning assigned areas, building cleanliness, sanitizing, and
sanitation, including entryways and exterior in close proximity to the building.
Perform routine building maintenance activities such as: checking boilers and burners, oiling fuel pumps, taking and reporting oil tank readings, cleaning oil strainers, replacing light bulbs, clearing snow and ice from stairs, entrances, and walkways, and other duties as determined by the Manager of Custodial Services.
Insure that proper 1PM procedures are followed by regular examination of the Integrated Pest Management log book located in the main office. Perform diligent review of areas that may allow for the access of pests, including but not limited to doorways, windows, wall cracks, open pipe and conduit spaces, and loading docks. Submit work orders to fill or repair any area that may allow access of pests.
Coordinate custodial (including summer restorative cleaning) and routine maintenance services. Participate in reviewing custodial and general maintenance issues and requests, prioritizing responses) determining needs and requisitioning trades staff services via the Town of Brookline Building Department's work order system.
Responsible for maintaining building security and safety including closing of the
building each night, setting alarm, instructing subordinates in securing building during and at end of the evening, and responding to call back situations from alarm company on a 24-hour basis.
Maintain records of subordinates' attendance and performance; evaluate performance informally and through formal building inspection; and provide counsel to staff, referring disciplinary issues to the Manager of Custodial Services.
Perform other such duties as supervisor deems reasonable and appropriate, such as
but not limited to moving furniture, picking up and delivering materials, removing
graffiti, minor repairs, painting, etc. Perform other related duties as assigned.
RECCOMENDED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Basic Knowledge
Duties require completion of four years of high school or equivalent, including knowledge of cleaning techniques, building operations and supervisory skills.
Experience
Prior custodial experience including supervision of staff.
SUPERVISION
Independent Action
The night Senior Custodian works under general supervision of the Manager of Custodial Services.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for daily supervision of staff and all custodial personnel.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Physical and Environmental Standards
Continuous walking, standing, and climbing of stairs.
Frequent periods spent bending, stooping, lifting moderately heavy objects, and
work on ladders.
Regular and sustained periods of strenuous physical exertion.
Operation of all cleaning equipment.
May require the exercise of caution when operating heavy equipment and handling
chemicals or other toxic materials, and the utilization of proper sanitary precautions
when handling trash, garbage and other potential hazards.
Work is generally conducted indoors and on school grounds.
The night Senior Custodian has contact with other school employees, students, and the
community.
