The City of Saint Charles Human Resources Department is recruiting for a full-time Field Maintenance Worker within the Public Works Sewer Division. This position performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance tasks and operates equipment for the construction, repair, maintenance, and replacement of City sewer, street, and storm drainage systems. The role requires intensive physical labor in outdoor conditions, including lifting and moving objects over 100 lbs., sustained manual labor, operating heavy tools, frequent bending and confined space entry, and working in extreme weather, noisy environments, and on uneven terrain.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Properly inspect and maintain heavy construction equipment, vehicles, tools, and supplies.
- Operate in a safe and efficient manner construction equipment and vehicles; specialized CCTV and cleaning / jetting equipment for sewer lines; and hand and power tools.
- Excavate, expose and repair sewer infrastructure and appurtenances via manual or mechanical methods.
- Knowledge of appropriate safety standards and procedures, including confined space and trench and excavation safety, and use of associated equipment.
- Participate in rotating on-call schedule and work overtime as required for civil emergencies, severe weather, special events, and after hour call-outs.
- Removes trash and obstructions which may block or interfere with the flow of sewerage or storm water.
- Clean and remove debris from storm and sanitary sewer systems, manholes, inlets, and culverts by manual or mechanical methods including but not limited to digging, rodding, bucketing, and jetting.
- Enters utility structures, manholes, and inlets, crawls through and/or "lamps" sewers to locate damage or obstructions.
- Locate, excavate, and expose by manual or mechanical methods buried manholes and underground sewer infrastructure.
- Assists in the inspection of sewer infrastructure for the detection of damage and causes of problems and their correction; operates sewer camera inspection equipment.
- Repairs and replaces defective or broken sewer infrastructure.
- Operate and trouble shoot vacuum sewer systems, utilizing technical expertise to diagnose issues and implement effective solutions.
- Utilize technology to document work, conduct inspections on sewer assets, and maintain accurate digital records.
- Performs duties of Street Maintenance Worker including snow and ice control operations.

Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- A working knowledge of underground utility systems, and associated methods, procedures and materials used in maintenance, construction and repair of sanitary and storm sewer infrastructure.
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Possession and maintenance of a valid Missouri Class A Commercial Drivers License with air brakes and tanker endorsements.
