Summary Description\:
Under general supervision, performs semiskilled work of more than routine nature in maintaining buildings, grounds, and equipment, or hauling maintenance materials. Positions in this class require skill in the use of hand tools and the more simple power tools, or in the operation of automotive equipment. Employees serving as helpers in the various building trades are also assigned to this general class. Work is normally performed under the guidance of a supervisor or skilled crafter who issues written or oral orders and makes frequent inspections to assure correct performance of work. Employees may act as work leader for a small number of workers of a lower or equal grade.Physical Demands\:Ability to perform work requiring the lifting and moving of very heavy objects weighing over up to 100 lbs. and to perform related strenuous labor, occasionally under adverse conditions.Special Requirements\:Employees in this classification are considered emergency personnel and are frequently required to report to work during inclement weather and other emergencies. Required to wear personal protective equipment as required. Knowledge Skills Abilities\:
Successful completion of the completion of the MCPS General Maintenance Worker written (knowledge) and hands-on (demonstration) skills test at the minimum or higher required score. Working knowledge of the practices, methods, and materials of several building and grounds maintenance trades. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to use and maintain the more common hand and power tools of the trade(s) to which assigned. Ability to operate farm type tractors, trucks with a gross vehicle weight (GVW) in excess of 26,000 pounds, and light automotive equipment in a safe and effective manner. Ability and willingness to learn a wide variety of tasks required in building and grounds maintenance work. Working knowledge of the effective operation of such powered equipment as backhoes, trenchers, pressure washers. Ability to perform heavy labor. Ability to communicate with others, including completion of basic reports, work orders, etc. Good human relation skills. Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
Education Training Experience\:
High School or GED diploma required. Completion of in-service training courses or equivalent. Experience in performing building general maintenance, grounds and equipment maintenance and general construction/maintenance work. OSHA/MOSH training, asbestos, backhoe, and trenching training, training in operating and maintaining equipment (commercial roller, chippers, mowing equipment, backhoes, skid loaders, excavators, forklifts, rock hounds, auger, tiller, hydraulic brooms.) Experience with asphalt and concrete planes and saws, trencher, air compressors. Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered. Certificate License\: Possession of a valid Maryland Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for vehicles excess of 26,000 pounds and large equipment on a trailer, Department of Transportation medical certificate.
