The Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery is dedicated to Veterans and their families as a lasting memorial, and final resting place, in appreciation and gratitude for their service and sacrifice to our nation. The Cemetery is located at 1415 North Gate Rd in Madison, IN 47250.

Role Overview:

  • Maintaining grounds through mowing, planting, and cleaning
  • Digging and preparing graves using heavy equipment like backhoes
  • Installing and repairing headstones; arranging and maintaining flowers and decorations
  • Managing litter and debris
  • Interacting with grieving families and funeral directors with empathy and professionalism
  • Using equipment for snow and ice removal
  • Working in inclement weather
  • The ability to lift approximately 50 lbs
  • Ability to climb ladders, squat, and bend over
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time

Salary Statement :

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $31,668.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Serve as a general maintenance person to inspect and maintain all facilities, grounds, and equipment.
  • Perform routine carpentry, plumbing, and electrical repairs.
  • Ensure all employees are properly trained to operate equipment and are properly educated to follow established safety policies and procedures.
  • Direct, assist, and support recreational special events as needed.
  • Assist with purchasing and inventory of incoming supplies, materials, and repair parts.
  • Responsible for major and minor equipment, vehicle, and vessel repairs.
  • Maintain grounds which may include mowing, weeding, aerating, spraying, fertilizing, and tree trimming or removal.
  • Responsible for maintaining all roads such as painting, snow plowing, sanding, and salting, repaving, or repairing.
  • Responsible for providing public safety on property, provide assistance in an emergency, or aid in rescue of accident victims.
  • Assist law enforcement with investigation of illegal activities on properties.
  • May assist and perform wildlife resource management
  • Workday attendance at assigned worksite(s) is an essential function of this position.

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:

  • A high school diploma or GED.
  • Be willing to travel with reasonable accommodation.
  • Working knowledge of, and ability to apply, general maintenance practices.
  • Working knowledge of an ability to use skills in electrical, plumbing, and carpentry.
  • Ability to a wide array of hand and power tools.
  • Ability to determine malfunctions of electrical and mechanical equipment and make simple repairs.
  • Ability to operate a variety of vehicles, vessels, and large equipment.
  • Ability to do basic math and bookkeeping for use in property operations.
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports: This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
