Maintenance Worker
Purpose Statement:
The district maintenance worker maintains school buildings and grounds in top condition to ensure full and productive use of district facilities.
This job reports to the Maintenance Supervisor.
Essential Functions:
- Attends meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. for the purpose of gathering information required to perform job functions.
- Maintains school buildings and grounds in top conditions to ensure full and productive use of district facilities.
- Ensure that all activities conform to district guidelines.
- Monitors activities in and around work areas (e.g. halls, multipurpose rooms, lunch rooms, grounds, etc.) for the purpose of preventing injuries and ensuring site safety.
- Performs repairs and routine maintenance to ensure safe, efficient, and properly functioning school buildings.
- Appropriately operate all equipment and machinery as necessary.
- Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g. facility damage, vandalism, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action or notifying appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Supports school custodial staff for the purpose of completing site custodial activities.
- Ability to engage in prolonged standing, stooping, carrying, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning, reaching, and frequent walking.
- Strength and ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to climb ladders.
- Ability to work in locations involving heights or confined spaces; to work indoors and outdoors year-round in noisy, crowded environments, and inclement weather.
Other Functions:
Performs other related duties as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating equipment used in industrial maintenance including electrical equipment, common tools, etc; and adhering to safety practices. Ability to repair and maintain HVAC systems, electrical systems, and plumbing systems, and perform general maintenance, and repairs.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents; and/or ratios, read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the job functions including methods of industrial repair, safety practices, and procedures; and English and/or bilingual grammar/punctuation/spelling/vocabulary. Knowledge of HVAC systems, electrical principles, plumbing systems, and general maintenance tasks.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities; gather and/or collate data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in various circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with specific, job related data; and utilize various
job-related equipment. Some problem solving may be required to identify issues and select action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job including: adapting to changing work priorities: communicating with diverse
groups; meeting deadlines and schedules; working as part of a team and working with constant interruptions.

Working Environment:
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger
dexterity. Generally the job requires 5% sitting, 70% walking, and 25% standing. This job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
