CITY OF NORFOLK: Department of Public Works is currently seeking a BMP Maintenance Worker II within the Division of Environmental Storm Water Management. This position is the team leader position responsible for the field crews that perform maintenance of ditches, drains, and retention ponds, the installation, repair, and maintenance of stormwater infrastructure, and the sweeping of city streets.
Maintenance Worker II's are responsible for operating heavy construction equipment and participating in the routine functions of an operational storm water crew. This is a grant funded special project position and will only be eligible for employment for 5-years.
The Department of Public Works builds, maintains and operates the physical facilities that support and enhance the lives of Norfolks citizens, businesses and visitors, including the Citys Street Network, Traffic Management System, Storm Water System, Waste Management, and Recycling.
Departmental Hiring Salary Range: $40,960 - $43,008
Essential functions include, but are not limited to:
One year as a Maintenance Worker, or successful completion of the Operations Apprentice program based on assignment.
The preferred candidate will have the ability to:
Climb, stoop, and bend.
Lift up to 75 pounds.
Use considerable knowledge of traffic laws and regulations as they apply to heavy motorized equipment.
Understand oral and written instructions.
Use adequate hearing, vision, and depth perception to safely work in the right of way and operate construction equipment in streets with high traffic volume.
Work over open water or from boats.
Work in confined spaces.
Work from elevations requiring fall protection.
Work in adverse weather conditions, including extreme temperatures and wet / rainy environments during both emergency and non-emergency conditions.
Must possess a valid Drivers License.
A CDL is required within six (6) months of appointment. Must provide a copy of Division of Motor Vehicle driving record (obtained within last 30 days) during the interview.
CDL Drivers License is preferred.
Tanker endorsement is preferred.
Pesticide Applicator a plus.
Work Hours: Monday Friday from 6:30 am to 3:00 pm; 40 hours per week every week; This position may require the candidate to work a mandatory rotating on-call schedule and respond to after-hour emergencies.
Signing Bonus: This position is eligible for a one-time $5000 sign on bonus.

- Participates in general labor functions as part of an operational storm water crew that performs the installation, maintenance, cleaning, and repairs to ditches, drains, structures, retention ponds, and other storm water infrastructure.
- Maintains and repairs city infrastructure by opening manhole structures, breaking stoppages, digging/excavating, laying pipes, building brick/concrete manhole structures, fitting joints, dewatering, assembling pipes, grading areas, setting forms, and cleaning work areas.
- Supports the street sweeping operations by removing abandoned shopping carts from city streets, cleaning dead ends and underpasses, and cleaning trash and debris from city land.
- Supports the preventative and emergency inspections and maintenance for all mechanical and electrical storm water machinery and equipment such as pumping stations, emergency generators, flood gates, outfall valves, and tide gauges.
- Operates various hand-held and walk-behind power tools such as blowers, weed eaters, lawn mowers, pressure washers, chainsaws, jackhammers, concrete saws, asphalt kettles, compactors, etc.
- May operate construction equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, front end loaders, skid steer, and rodding machines.
- Operates heavy equipment. Performs daily vehicle safety checks on equipment. Performs general maintenance and repairs on equipment and vehicles as needed.
- Transports workers, equipment, and construction material to and from job sites.
- Performs minor equipment and tool inspection, maintenance, and repairs.
- Assists loading and unloading equipment and materials on job sites.
- Performs general maintenance by cleaning, sweeping, mopping, litter pick up, vegetation maintenance, etc. for buildings, yards, and vehicles.
- Supports training of personnel on safety, equipment, and job functions.
- Establishes safe work environments by setting up traffic control, trench boxes, cones, signs, etc, and ensuring appropriate personal protective equipment is utilized. Performs traffic flagging as required.
- Responds to emergencies by removing storm damage debris, plowing snow/ice from right of way, dewatering flooded areas, and placing temporary patches on roadways.
