DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This position involves responsibility for supervising and performing maintenance activities in the upkeep of outdoor parks, recreation areas and municipal grounds. The incumbent is responsible for assigning work to subordinate staff and overseeing on-site performance of the work to ensure that it is carried out properly and diligently. The position is distinguished from Park Maintenance Supervisor by the limited responsibility for planning and scheduling the work to be performed. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Park Maintenance Supervisor with leeway allowed for exercising independent judgment in carrying out details of the work. Supervision is exercised over subordinate park maintenance staff. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: Assigns daily activities to subordinate staff in accordance with prescribed maintenance schedule; Oversees and participates in mowing, watering and trimming of grassy public areas within the City; Oversees and participates in sodding, seeding and fertilizing of grassing public areas within the City; Oversees and participates in spraying for eradication of insects and other pests in the grassy public areas within the City; Oversees and participates in the treating of trees and grass with fungicides, insecticides and other chemicals; Oversees and participates in the pruning of trees, shrubs, and hedges; Oversees and participates in the watering of ball fields, parks and other public areas; Oversees and participates in landscape construction; Oversees and participates in the repair of all grounds maintenance equipment; Requisitions and maintains inventory of supplies tools and equipment necessary for grounds maintenance activities; Prepares a variety of records and reports related to the work.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES & PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in grounds maintenance activities; good knowledge of the use of herbicides and pesticides; working knowledge of the principles and methods used in the care of trees and shrubs; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions; skill in the operation of grounds maintenance equipment; willingness to perform manual work out of doors, occasionally under adverse weather conditions; ability to operate a personal computer and utilize common office software programs including word processing, spreadsheet, and database at an acceptable rate of accuracy and speed; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered two (2) year college with an Associate's degree in landscaping or a related field and two (2) years experience in parks or ground maintenance, including the use of herbicides and pesticides.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must have NYS Pesticide Applicator's certificate by the end of probation and must possess a N.Y.S. CDL-B level driver's license at time of appointment and maintain the license and certificate during the entire length of appointment.
