Job Description
Under general supervision of the City Manager or designee, the Public Works Maintenance Worker performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance, repair, and construction tasks related to the maintenance of City infrastructure, including streets, rights-of-way, storm drains, signage, buildings, and public facilities and performs related work, as required. Operates equipment and vehicles in support of City maintenance functions and responds to public service requests and emergencies as needed.
Responsibilities (Duties may include, but are not limited to):
· Monday through Thursday from 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM. However, flexible availability is required due to inclement weather conditions, community events, and/or emergency response needed within the City.
· Shovel and rake asphalt; patch potholes; install and replace street signage and posts.
· Perform rough masonry, concrete work, and basic carpentry, plumbing, and painting.
· Remove weeds and litter from City rights-of-way and public grounds; clean storm drains; seal cracks and maintain streets.
· Remove graffiti throughout the City using appropriate removal techniques, including pressure washing, chemical solutions, and repainting as needed.
· Conduct preventive maintenance and minor repairs on City buildings and facilities.
· Operate light vehicles and equipment, including skid steers, club cars, and trucks.
· Use hand and power tools safely and effectively; paint street legends and maintain traffic control devices.
· Inspect, clean, and maintain storm drainage systems.
· Assist with special projects and events as needed.
· Set up and take down work zones, including safety signage and barricades.
· Perform USA DigAlert markings prior to excavation.
· Follow all applicable safety procedures and utilize proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
Physical requirements and Working Environment:
Employee must be able to perform heavy manual work which may include lifting objects weighing more than 75 pounds; moderate exposure to dust, temperature, noise, and inclement weather; occasional exposure to hazardous work conditions. Employee may be required to respond to emergencies after regular working hours and on weekends, and must be willing to work an irregular schedule, which may include weekends, holidays, and/or varying shifts.
Qualifications:
· Valid California Class C Drivers License and satisfactory driving record.
· High School Diploma OR GED equivalent.
· One year of experience in work involving construction or street maintenance, including duties in any one or more of the following areas: streets, traffic control, facilities maintenance or related labor work.
