CUSTODIAN
JOB SUMMARY:
Responsible for: light plumbing, changing light bulbs, room climate maintenance, transportation of bio-hazardous materials, snow/ice removal scrubbing/stripping/waxing floors, other duties assigned to Environmental Services Technicians
PRE-REQUISITES:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Experience: Ability to read, write and understand English required.
Other Skills: Must possess a valid driver's license with clean driving record and be insurable by NMC's insurance policy.
RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports To: Manager, Environmental Services
Supervises: N/A
Other Contacts: All hospital employees, patients and their families, and the general public
SCOPE:
Machinery or Equipment Used: Industrial cleaning equipment: vacuum cleaner, mop, broom/dustpan, linen cart, trash barrel on barrel roller, trash compactor, washing machine, case-knife, power cleaning equipment, auto-scrubbers, extractors, burnishers, step ladder, dolly, computer, phone, beeper
Physical Demands: Energy requirements for frequent mopping, pushing/pulling, lifting, etc. Occasional: kneeling, squatting, overhead reaching and lifting up to 55 lbs. Frequent: reaching, bending, and pushing/pulling, lifting, carrying up to 14 lbs., walking with and without the hospital in all weather, repetitive gripping for extended time (approx. 3.5 hrs.), and constant use of hand
Working Conditions: Potential for spills of cleaning agents, mop buckets, etc. and potential exposure to blood borne pathogens when cleaning, exposure to extreme temperatures, uneven surfaces, confined spaces, minor vibration, high elevations. Expected to work independently, while subject to interruptions, high patient volume, and ability to adjust for absenteeism
Required Protective Equipment: Mask, booties, gloves, hairnet, lab coat, face shield, gown and goggles
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Performs cleaning, minor maintenance, handling of waste, disposal and material handling using safe work practices and following policies and procedures for each task
Performs tasks in the correct order to maintain the integrity of the environment
Reviews work completed to verify the correct steps have been completed
2. Acts a liaison to Plant and Property Department staff
Performs minor maintenance using safe work practices and follows policies and procedures
3. Performs all tasks in a safe manner using safe work practices
Wears appropriate PPE for all tasks
Follows directions when mixing chemicals
Uses appropriate equipment for the task
Uses proper body mechanics
4. Communicates with patients, team members, and management in an accurate and timely manner evidenced by:
Requests Plant & Property assistance when appropriate for weather conditions, unresolved maintenance needs and alarms
Talks with and listens to patients/team members
Reports pertinent information
Protects confidentiality of patient/colleagues
5. Applies leadership skills
Interacts with others in professional manner
Manages conflict
Delegates and assigns tasks
Serves as a resource to Environmental Services team members
Provides education and training as requested by manager
6. Demonstrates the unit specific skills requisite for department
