Detailed OverviewReporting to the Manager, Health Services or designate, the Food Service Worker provides a variety of food service duties such as limited food preparation such as heating prepared food and making tea, coffee, toast, salads and sandwiches; provides food service by serving and portioning food and beverages according to established guidelines and standards. Performs cleaning duties, stacks dishes, receives and stores food items, and performs administrative duties.
Responsibilities
- Heats and reheats assigned prepared food and therapeutic diet items using bulk rethermalization equipment. If required, tests heated food for palatability. Takes and records temperatures as per established standards and adjusts heat accordingly. Serves and portions menu items as per established procedures including guidelines regarding individual diets/preferences/allergies; reports problems or concerns to the Health Services Manager or designate.
- Provides food service duties such as opening cans and bringing out and putting away supplies. Operates dishwashing and kitchen equipment.
- Performs limited food preparation duties such as washing, peeling, chopping vegetables and making tea, coffee, toast, sandwiches, soups and salads as requested utilizing equipment such as slicers, knives and choppers.
- Performs cleaning duties such as cleaning food preparation equipment, heating cart, cupboards, sinks and work tables, toasters, ovens, and other kitchen equipment. Stacks clean, dry dishes, cutlery and pots, cleans dining tables and removes garbage from dining room and kitchen.
- Performs inventory control duties such as receiving and storing food items, and rotating food and supplies in accordance with established standards of food handling, cleanliness and safety.
- Performs administrative duties such as answering the telephone, filing, writing information on menu cards and checking cards against lists.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Grade 12 or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience and successful completion of a recognized Food Safe 1 Certificate.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to operate related equipment.
- Ability to deal with others effectively.
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
