Groundskeeper Crew Leader
FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE
Performs a variety of skilled work in the maintenance and care of the grounds, playing fields, rights-of way, and related school system owned property. Serves as crew leader over a small group of workers.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversees the work of a mowing or specialty crew.
- Performs grounds maintenance duties using mowers, tractors, skid steer, backhoe, snow removal equipment, and other light to heavy duty power equipment and hand tools.
- Checks equipment to insure proper operation. Performs minor troubleshooting and maintenance.
- Receives work assignments, assembles and loads material and needed equipment, for transportation to the work site.
- Drives trucks and dump trucks to transport workers, equipment, and materials.
- Cuts and trims lawns, edges, and blows sidewalks and curbs.
- Removes trash from lawns and parking areas.
- Sprays lawns, driveways, parking lots, beds, walking tracks, paths, playgrounds, fence lines, etc. with herbicides using backpack or powered sprayers.
- Repairs sink holes and other areas with erosion problems.
- Maintains, repairs, or installs storm drains, and other related piping.
- Grades areas as the job requires, which may include gravel parking areas.
- Conditions and prepares soils for planting.
- Plants grass, flowers, bulbs, seeds, trees, and shrubs.
- Weeds, mulches, and waters plant beds.
- Fertilizes plants and lawns.
- Sprays areas, including steep banks with herbicides to control woody vegetation growth.
- Mows steep banks with bank mowing tractor.
- Removes damaged trees, branches, and twigs.
- Maintains paths and road surfaces.
- Installs signs in parking lots and along driveways.
- Removes or mulches leaves.
- Prunes shrubs and trees to shape and improve growth.
- Cuts and removes dead, fallen, or dangerous trees.
- Trims tall trees and shrubbery that require the use of a bucket truck.
- Inspects, maintains, and repairs playground equipment, and surrounding fall zones.
- Maintains gravel dust walking tracks.
- Maintains storm water retention ponds, and makes repairs as needed.
- Repairs or replaces damaged dumpsters.
- Repairs damaged asphalt.
- Clears snow and ice from driveways, parking lots, and sidewalks.
- Trains employees.
- Observes work in progress.
- Gives directions for corrections as needed.
- Ensures that work is completed in a safe, efficient, and effective manner; responds to all incidents and inquiries.
- Purchases supplies as needed.
- Performs related duties as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Working knowledge of grounds maintenance and basic horticultural practices.
- Working knowledge of planting, cultivating, pruning, spraying, and trimming requirements of flowers, shrubs and trees.
- Considerable knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in grounds maintenance.
- General knowledge of the hazards and related safety practices related to the work.
- Knowledge of playground safety regulations.
- Skill to drive dump trucks or road tractor.
- Skill to transport grounds maintenance equipment.
- Skill to operate light to heavy power equipment.
- Ability to use, sharpen and make minor repairs to tools and equipment.
- Ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions.
- Ability to follow and draft simple landscape sketches and designs.
- Ability to assign and supervise the work of subordinates, and to instruct them in proper work, safety methods, and procedures.
- Ability to coordinate the efforts of a group of employees.
- Ability to train other workers.
- Ability to provide leadership to employees in this class.
- Ability to engage in heavy manual labor for extensive periods of time in a variety of weather conditions.
- Ability to actively engage on a regular basis with the division's "School Dude" work order system.
- Have working knowledge of basic computer skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, supervisors, employees, and the public.
- Position requires the ability to work occasional scheduled overtime and be available for emergency overtime when the need arises by responding to after-hours emergencies, which may include weekends and holidays.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum: Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for job performance
- Minimum: Valid NC Driver's License
- Minimum: Three years' experience in the care and maintenance of plants, lawns, trees, flowers, and shrubs, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:
- Must hold or obtain within six months of employment a valid North Carolina Class A commercial driver's license.
- Must hold or obtain within one year of employment a NCDA Ornamentals & Turfgrass Public Operator Pesticide license.
Pay Grade LB - $2,892.24 Monthly Salary - Full Time Position
