This position is approved for FY26 and will not be filled until after July 1, 2025.
The Custodian-I performs janitorial duties in City buildings, warehouses and offices to maintain clean, orderly and safe conditions and performs routine repairs as required.
Education / higher education: High School Graduate or equivalent
Minimum number of years of related experience: Six months of experience in general cleaning or in a position with maintenance responsibilities in any industry (residential or commercial).
Education and/or experience preferences: Specialized experience in operating floor scrubbing and carpet shampooing equipment.
Driver's License requirement: Frequent Driver -- Regular Driver's License Required Endorsements: None
Note -- For any driver, driving record must always meet City driving and insurability standards.

Preferred certifications, licenses or registrations: NoneKnowledge: Basic cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.
Skills: Operating floor scrubbing and carpet shampooing equipment.
Abilities: Learn how to operate and maintain cleaning equipment, use cleaning chemical solutions. Learn and adhere to safety procedures, OSHA regulations, and Employee Right to Know Act. Comprehend and carry out simple verbal instructions and recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers.
Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: Internal: Works with other custodians and maintenance staff to maintain offices, warehouses, and grounds. Has daily interaction with employees at on-site facilities. External: General public, customers, and public officials.

- Performs janitorial duties in City buildings, warehouses, and offices to maintain clean, orderly and safe conditions adhering to safety procedures at all times. Tasks include, but are not limited to:
- Cleans and sanitizes restroom facilities; to include cabinets, tile areas, dispensers, waste baskets, toilet bowls, urinals, lavatories, stall partitions, doors, mirrors, windows and trim.
- Cleans, dusts, sweeps, vacuums and waxes offices, to include floors, desks, furniture, book cases, filing cabinets, ashtrays, waste baskets, switches, walls, partitions, and doors.
- Cleans water fountains, sinks, and kitchens, to include furniture, sinks, counters, food and preparation areas.
- Cleans air discharge and return grills and disposes of trash.
- Locks and unlocks all areas in which work is performed.
- Cleans outside areas and common areas as required.
- Assists with room set-up for meetings and special events.
- Changes light bulbs.
- Monitors utilization of janitorial supplies and alerts supervisor when reordering required.
- Notifies the supervisor concerning need for major repairs or additions to lighting, heating, and ventilating equipment and systems.
