PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Assist in the organization and supervision of the work of custodians as required by the principal or his designee, ensure that standards of cleanliness, sanitation, safety and security are met, and is responsible for cleaning assigned area.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Certification Requirements
- High school graduate or GED equivalent, preferred
- Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check
Special Knowledge and Skills
- Ability to read and understand instructions for cleaning, maintenance, and safety procedures
- Knowledge of minor repairs techniques and building and grounds maintenance
- Ability to operate cleaning equipment and lift heavy equipment
- Ability to properly handle cleaning supplies
- Ability to work well with staff and employees
- Ability to carry out directives from supervisor
Experience:
- Minimum of two (2) years in custodial services
- Supervisory ability or supervisory experience, preferred
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Work closely with custodial staff to train them in the proper use of materials and equipment
Assist the head custodian in the physical arrangements for school rental, dances and other extracurricular activities
Upon request of the administration, proposes shift schedules and informs the administration when replacement or extra help is required
Keep the principal and designee informed of defective or unsafe plant conditions
Make minor repairs when requested within his/her resources and any necessary adjustments to plant equipment and fixtures
Keeps light bulbs and tubes replaced
Attend custodial in-service when requested
Work with school administrators on submission of work orders on maintenance repairs and conduct follow-up to insure timely completions
When requested by the school administration, will develop daily work schedules for campus custodians
Handle emergencies and performs other assignments directed by the principal or designee
May be required to do some touch up painting
Assist with moving furniture or equipment as required
Clean and maintain area(s) assigned
Assist with responsibility for opening and closing building each day
Assist with responsibility for locking, checking, and safeguarding facilities
Inspect and operate tools and equipment for safety and efficiency
Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties
Punctual and dependable
Perform other duties as assigned, based on department needs
Must complete designated district technology proficiencies each year
Requires a basic knowledge of technology/computer skills
Ability to use personal computer to access district programs, emails, and other resources
Maintain a consistent professional demeanor and appearance
Ensure compliance with the Texas Educator's Code of Ethics
Daily attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Assist with monitoring and directing the work of the custodians
Equipment Used:
- Office equipment - personal computer, printer, calculator, multi-line telephone, software programs and peripherals, copier, fax, and other equipment applicable to position
- Communication equipment - radio communication equipment, cellular telephone
- Buffer, stripper, wet and dry vacuum cleaner, electric drill, hand tools, shampooer
Mental Demands:
- Ability to read, concentrate, communicate (verbally and written), interpret, reason, understand verbal instructions, memorize, coordinate, compile, compute
- Work with frequent interruptions and maintain emotional control under stress
Physical Demands:
- Frequent: Sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, ladders and/or ramps, using a scissor lift, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive hand motions, hearing, speaking clearly, visual acuity, distinguishing colors, driving, traveling
- Occasional: Lifting, heavy, 45 pounds or more
Environmental Factors:
- Frequent exposure to: temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise, low or intense illumination, vibration
- Occasional exposure to: biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, mold, fungi, etc.)
- Work outside, work around moving objects or vehicles, work on uneven surfaces
- Work alone, work prolonged or irregular hours
