BASIC JOB DESCRIPTION:
Under the direction and general supervision of the Coordinator Food Services, performs routine service-level duties to assist with food preparation, serving and clean up. Specific work assignments may vary by location, however, the position carries out routine food preparation duties such as periodically baking premade items (i.e. cookies, etc.) , salad and fruit preparation, preparing main dishes, and cleaning up, and using basic arithmetic (i.e. recipes, estimating lunch counts, money exchange). Shall be familiar, and comply, with all collective bargaining contracts pertinent to this position. Adheres to all applicable laws, rules and regulations of the state, county and school district governing board.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operates and practices proper care of miscellaneous kitchen/cafeteria equipment such as slicers, mixers and ovens.
- Assists in the preparation and serving of food from established menus.
- Stores or disposes of excess food according to proper procedures.
- Cleans and sanitizes kitchen cooking area and equipment (i.e. carts, meat slicer, can openers, ovens, packing machine).
- Maintains confidentiality concerning staff, students and their families.
- Maintains an acceptable attendance record.
- Maintains a clean, orderly work station.
- Willingness to update skills and knowledge, through in-service training, commensurate with the demands of this position (i.e. new equipment, proper meal counting, Free and Reduced meal requirements).
- Shall perform other job related duties as assigned on an equitable basis.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
- Ability to see for the purpose of reading menus, rules, policies, procedures and other printed matter and observing students, with or without vision aids; ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels; ability to communicate so others will clearly understand normal conversation.
- Basic knowledge of food preparation, methods, service and procedures, weights and measures, and kitchen safety and sanitation.
- Ability to retrieve inventory from the warehouse for kitchen prep.
- Ability to handle cash and operate the POS systems.
- Ability to perform the routine duties of the position under direct supervision.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Professional demeanor that establishes a desirable example for children.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Ability to pass the District job related test. (i.e. Job specific testing related to Physical Demand section of this job description)
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Primarily indoor cafeteria environment.
- Standing for extended periods of time; ability to reach in all directions; periodic lifting of up to 50 pounds, carrying of 30 pounds, loading and unloading of food with or without assisted lifting. Sufficient hand coordination to use kitchen utensils and equipment.
- Work is performed in a commercial kitchen environment with safety considerations such as exposure to heat, extended standing, lifting and bending at the waist and neck.
- Moderate stress level.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
- Work is predominately inside and generally provides protection from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes.
- Work surface - work done primarily on concrete floors.
- Temperature - normal climate, but subject to heat from ovens and cold from walk-in refrigerators and freezers.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
- Two years' experience in preparation of institutional foods preferred.
CERTIFICATES/LICENSES
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid California driver's license.
- Current Food Handling certification.
