Under general direction, performs semi-skilled and manual labor associated with the operation, construction, installation, replacement, cleaning, maintenance, and/or repair of the Citys water, sewer collection and storm drain systems.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

Water Utility Worker I- The entry level class in which employees perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled duties in the construction, maintenance and operation of the Citys water distribution, sewer collections and storm drain system infrastructures. Incumbents are generally hired at the Water Utility Worker I level and promoted to level II upon demonstrating competency and regularly performing the full range of duties within the division.

Water Utility Worker II- The journey or fully experienced level class in which employees perform a full range of more complex assignments with minimal supervision.

  1. Installs, repairs and maintains the water distribution, sewer collection and storm drain systems (including retention ponds); operates and maintains pumping stations and camera equipment in the Citys sewer collection system; services, maintains and repairs chlorination stations.
  2. Operates and services equipment used in the repair, installation and maintenance of the systems including, but not limited to: compressors, jack hammers, backhoes, trenchers, tractors, and any other assigned light and heavy equipment.
  3. Performs groundwater sampling.
  4. Responds to customer calls.
  5. Provides training and guidance in areas of specialization to unskilled workers.
  6. Participates in after-hours emergency call-out duties.
  7. Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience:

Water Utilities Worker I- One year of experience in maintenance or related construction work or any combination of training and experience that provides the desired knowledge and abilities.

Water Utilities Worker II- Any combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for a Water Utilities Worker II.

Knowledge of:

Both Classes- Basic concepts of equipment maintenance and repair; use of basic hand and power tools and equipment used in general construction work; common maintenance safety knowledge.

Water Utilities Worker II- Equipment operation; techniques and methods used in the Water Utilities Division.

Ability to:

Both Classes- Work in confined spaces; Operate hand and power tools; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; perform heavy manual labor; understand and follow verbal and written instructions; work safely and efficiently; keep and maintain accurate records; work evenings, weekends and holidays.

Water Utilities Worker II- Understand simple blueprints or sketches; troubleshoot equipment malfunctions; communicate effectively; provide training and lead the work of others.

Special Requirements:
Both Classes- Must have earned a high school diploma, or equivalent.

Water Utilities Worker I - Possession of a valid California Drivers License. Ability to obtain a Water Distribution Grade I certification within eighteen (18) months from date of employment.

Water Utilities Worker II- Possession of or the ability to obtain a valid class A or B California Drivers license and Water Distribution Grade II certification within eighteen (18) months from date of appointment.

NOTE: Failure to obtain and maintain the valid certification grade and California Drivers license class required for the position shall be cause for termination from this class.
