This entry-level position is responsible for receiving, logging, inventory, control, and distribution of evidence, narcotics, monies, firearms, and property. Reports to the Evidence/Property Supervisor. Essential Functions
Minimum Qualifications
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Requires moderate physical effort including lifting up to 50 pounds. May require frequent crouching, kneeling, bending, and stooping. Frequent periods of standing or walking may be required.
- Receives all property entered in the designated property and evidence management files; sorts, files, transports, tags, stores, and inventories evidence and property, including firearms, weapons, contraband, narcotics, bicycles, and other property.
- Processes and files incoming, returned, and outgoing property receipts.
- Process all property for transport to the crime lab.
- Researches and notifies the owners of found property or property that can be returned to the owner.
- Prepares and inventories accurate lists of guns, firearms, and narcotics to be destroyed and monies for deposit.
- Responsible for the inventory and designation of items to be auctioned.
- Responds to in-person and telephone inquiries; provides information to the public regarding property in the custody of the police department.
- Maintains accurate information in the property and evidence management system including property in inventory and the current location of same in accordance with of chain-of-custody requirements.
- Researches, locates, and gathers evidence for department personnel. Operates a computer, photocopier, calculator, fax machine, and related office equipment.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalent and 1 year of clerical experience, preferably in a law enforcement environment; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Must have good typing skills.
- Must successfully complete department training in property and evidence control.
- Must possess a valid Florida driver's license.
- Must pass a background screening.
- Certified Evidence Specialist certification.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of the laws, rules, and regulations regarding property an evidence handling, preservation, and destruction.
- Knowledge of property and inventory control practices.
- Skill using a computer and related office equipment.
- Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
- Ability to adapt to an evolving and continually improving environment.
- Ability to respond to the guidance and direction of superiors.
- Ability to demonstrate a polite, helpful and courteous manner when engaged in with the public.
- Ability to operate and care for equipment to manufacturers specifications.
- Ability to demonstrate an understanding, consideration, and respect of cultural, religious, and gender differences when interacting with the general public and colleagues.
