Metropolitan Community College is the oldest public institution of higher learning in Kansas City, Missouri, founded in 1915 as the Kansas City Polytechnic Institute. Job Summary
Incumbents coordinate, monitor, and lead the activities of assigned of custodial or grounds keeping activities.
Essential Functions
Perform semi-skilled routine, minor maintenance work using hand and power tools following established procedures in the repair and maintenance of campus buildings and facilities under the supervision of a Maintenance Mechanic or Supervisor
Perform minor, routine maintenance duties to include, but not limited to, changing light bulbs and ceiling tile from the ground or on a ladder, and minor plumbing tasks, as directed by a Supervisor
Perform room setups and tear downs individually or with assistance following schematics and plans.
Perform maintenance of grounds by cleaning up debris, mowing lawns, raking leaves and grass, trimming shrubs and trees, etc.
Perform preventative maintenance and repair on grounds equipment
Perform custodial and grounds maintenance activities, to include planting trees, plants, and shrubs; mowing and raking lawns and assigned spaces; aerating and watering lawns; cleaning assigned areas; and disposing trash
Prepare and maintains records; maintain and order supplies as needed
Receive campus mail and packages, sort into mailboxes and deliver items to individuals or offices as directed by Supervisor
Perform snow removal and salting duties when required
Performs other duties of a similar nature or level
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Physical Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma OR equivalent (G.E.D.)
Two (2) years custodial, grounds or maintenance related experience
Valid Driver's License
Preferred Qualifications:
Associate's degree
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of basic cleaning and grounds maintenance techniques
Knowledge to operate applicable equipment and tools
Knowledge to use applicable cleaning chemicals
Knowledge of basic understanding of computers and related software applications
Skilled in cleaning and sanitizing facilities and equipment
Skilled in using applicable tools and equipment
Skilled in monitoring and replenishing inventory
Skilled in preparing records and logs
Skilled in using a computer and related software applications
Skilled in utilizing communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, and others sufficient to exchange or convey information
Ability to safely perform minor building maintenance duties
Ability to move and arrange furniture and equipment
Ability to interpret room setup requests
Ability to write routine reports
Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers and all levels of staff and faculty
Ability to create and foster a diverse and inclusive work environment
Ability to deliver exceptional customer service
Physical Requirements
Positions in this class typically require: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, keyboarding, grasping, hearing, kneeling, pulling, pushing, stooping, reaching, repetitive motion, standing, talking, visual acuity, and walking. The work is very heavy work which requires exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Incumbents may be exposed to hazardous physical conditions, such as, mechanical parts, electrical currents, and vibrations; atmospheric conditions, such as fumes, odors, gases, and poor ventilation; hazardous materials, such as chemicals, blood, and other bodily fluids; extreme temperatures; inadequate lighting; work space-related movement restrictions; intense noise; other environmental conditions, such as, challenging behaviors, imminent danger, and threatening environment.
