About the Position
The Vegetation and Habitat Operations Section, within Public Works seeks a technically competent, safety conscious, hardworking individual with good interpersonal skills to fill a Maintenance Worker I position.
The Vegetation and Habitat Operations Section performs operations and maintenance on select properties managed by the Water Resources Line of Business, Transportation Line of Business, Citywide Noxious Weed Control as well as Habitat projects on Water Resources properties and select projects on Parks Department properties.
Specifically, the work of this section includes:
Over 130 pesticide applications per year.
Vegetation management on approximately 60 sites owned/managed by the Citys Stormwater utility.
Maintenance and cleaning of over 20,000 linear feet of pervious sidewalks.
Landscape maintenance on nine pump station properties.
Landscape maintenance on 48 medians, islands and roundabouts within the ROW.
Inspection of over 340 City owned stormwater treatment and flow control facilities/BMPs as part of the Citys required compliance with our Municipal NPDES permit.
Planting and care of several thousand trees/shrubs per year on numerous habitat restoration projects.
Pruning of several thousand street trees; and
Other vegetation related special projects as requested.
This position plays a key role in helping enhance the capacity and technical capability of a diverse and dedicated team of vegetation specialists. Technical competency associated with vegetation management, landscape maintenance, arboriculture, habitat enhancement and noxious weed abatement, as well as the ability and desire to mentor others are a must.
Ideal Candidate Profile
Valid Washington State Drivers License, (A class A CDL is preferred).
Current flagger card and experience in the installation and maintenance of temporary traffic control devices used for work in the ROW.
Washington State Pesticide applicators license (Public operator with ROW endorsement) and experience in the control of noxious weeds is preferred.
Demonstratable skill in safe operation and routine maintenance of chainsaws, brush cutters, line trimmers, blowers and mowers.
Working knowledge of irrigation system design, operation and repair.
CPR and First Aid training.
Demonstratable skill in the identification and management of native and typical landscape plants, as well as noxious and invasive weeds.
Demonstratable knowledge of landscape management principles. Including mowing, edging, trimming, weeding, hedging and pruning of trees and shrubs.
Demonstratable knowledge of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) principles specifically related to noxious and invasive weed control.
Working knowledge of habitat restoration techniques, including site prep, planting and post planting care of trees and shrubs.
Working knowledge of arboriculture including proper tree pruning and the use of tree pruning equipment and chippers.
Ability to use tact and good judgment in responding to questions from citizens and the general public.

Essential Functions The essential functions of this position include but are not limited to:
1. Maintenance Workers I are responsible for basic, general upkeep, repair and/or cleaning in and around city buildings, structures, and property.
2. Assist with maintenance activities performed in Public Works, Parks, Olympia Center, and City facilities.
3. Perform basic pruning, fertilizing and transplanting; brush and litter removal; operation of tractors, hand/power mowers, edgers and fertilizer application devices; and may be trained on specialized equipment.
4. Assists with street repairs and winter sanding operations; shoveling various materials; operate hand/power tools; and other basic street maintenance.
5. Drives pickup and dump truck; and operate roller, paving machines, back hoe or street sweeper.
6. Assists with street signs and markings, guard rail, curbing and sidewalk repairs.
7. Assists in digging ditches and laying sewer/water/stormwater pipe; cleaning and checking valves; monitoring pumps for proper operation; and maintenance hole and pavement repairs.
8. Punctual, regular and reliable attendance is essential for successful job performance.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
1. Knowledge of basic building, landscaping or building maintenance techniques.
2. Knowledge of basic safety procedures and precautions.
3. Skill in operating and maintaining small manual/power tools and equipment.
4. Ability to perform strenuous physical activity.
5. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
6. Ability to work as a member of a crew.
7. Ability to respond to citizen inquiries appropriately.
Experience/Education:
1. One year's general work experience required.
2. Experience in specialty area (i.e. landscaping, building maintenance, streets, etc.) preferred.
3. Some positions may require the employee obtain special certification (such as Pesticide Applicators card or CDL) within timelines specified by the State of Washington or the City of Olympia.
Special Requirement:
1. Some positions may require a valid Washington State Drivers' License or Commercial Driver's License.
