A successful candidate will play an active role in the City of College Parks existing operational success. The purpose of the position is to independently perform work of a recurring and regular nature in accordance with established and well-known policies, procedures, and practices. Progress of work is checked and instruction is provided on accomplishing work involving unusual problems or the use of unfamiliar equipment.Independent judgment is required to identify, select and apply the most appropriate of available guidelines and procedures as well as interpret precedents. This position is responsible for the general maintenance and cleaning of City facilities. Duties include routine and regular cleaning sanitizing, sweeping mopping, vacuuming of floors, and making minor equipment and facility repairs.

  • Daily garbage collection and disposal.
  • Wet and dry mops floors; vacuums, strips, waxes, and buffs floors; operates power-cleaning equipment, mechanical cleaners, and polishers and mixes cleaning agents as directed.
  • Vacuums, spot-cleans, and shampoos carpets; empties and cleans waste receptacles.
  • Dust, waxes, washes, and polishes furniture, counters, woodwork, and metalwork.
  • Cleans and washes windows, walls, windowsills, and screens, as assigned.
  • Cleans restrooms and replenishes supplies.
  • Moves and arranges furniture and equipment as required.
  • Performs basic maintenance repairs on the building.
  • Orders and maintains an inventory of custodial supplies as directed.
  • Performs a variety of labor tasks including loading or unloading supplies.
  • Performs basic installation or repairs to doors, walls, ceilings, floors, roofs, mechanical and electrical equipment, and hardware.
  • Perform painting and related duties.
  • Perform basic carpentry and drywall work.
  • Supply basic engineering services for trade shows and events.
  • Operate building automated systems including HVAC controls.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that logically relate to the position.
  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn, standard cleaning methods and equipment used in custodial work such as brooms, mops, dust mops, vacuums, scouring devices, and wax applicators.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in building maintenance and repairs.
  • Some experience in commercial building maintenance or construction.
  • Some knowledge of electrical, mechanical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, or related duties.
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment and determine solutions to problems is a plus.
  • Ability to operate hand and power tools, use ladders, lifts, etc.
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks and complete deadlines.
  • Ability to perform routine, repetitive tasks continuously.
  • Ability to work independently in maintaining a clean and orderly area after a sufficient training period.
  • Ability to work flexible hours to include weekdays and weekends based on programming needs.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
  • Must be able to use tact and courtesy in dealing with the public.
  • Must be able to analyze and evaluate procedures and work processes and to exercise appropriate judgment in establishing priorities and work methods.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships and to deal effectively and courteously with others, to work independently and in team settings.
  • Must be able to type or to use a personal computer with word processing and related software and to enter and retrieve information with reasonable speed and accuracy.
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling objects of average-weight up to fifty (100) pounds, standing, sitting, and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Experience in communicating with diverse communities, and in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, as well as knowledge and understanding of the organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures.
  • Extensive hours and weekends will be required at times.
