Under general direction of the Streets & Parks Superintendent and led by Utility Worker IV Participates in the daily functions, operations and activities of assigned public works functional areas including streets, sidewalks, storm water and drainage systems, street sweeping, traffic signage and striping, parks, and building maintenance and operations Participates in all work-related activities as required Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Perform semi-skilled to skilled work in municipal parks operations to include weed-eating, cleaning buildings, mower maintenance, trash pick-up, planting landscaping including trees, painting, playground inspections, equipment installation, etc. 2. Pick up trash and empty trash cans in City parks and facilities 3. Repair or replace damaged items in park facilities or grounds 4. Maintain and inspect playground and Park equipment regularly and document repairs cleaning, washing, preventive maintenance and servicing of equipment 5. Participate in all activities involved in the maintenance, diagnostics, repair, and installation of the streets, sidewalks and drainage system infrastructure, as well as any repairs as a result of these actions 6. Participate in preventative maintenance programs for the street and drainage department which include crack sealing, asphalt overlays, tree trimming, street and sidewalk evaluation, drainage and culvert maintenance 7. Repair broken drainage lines with new sections of pipe and new driveway culvert installations 8. Safely operate vehicles and heavy equipment such as excavators, loaders, bucket truck, and various equipment as well as using hand tools including hand saws, skill saws, drill press, mechanical vibrator, bolt cutters, picks, axes, shovels, air compressors, jackhammers, cutting torch, and various weight hammers 9. Responsible for the safe operation, care, and appearance of assigned vehicles and equipment including washing, servicing, and preventive maintenance checks 10. See that necessary materials, tools and equipment are taken to the work site in an efficient and orderly manner 11. Communicate courteously with the public and other City employees 12. Serve on a rotating shift that includes holidays and weekends for after hour calls; subject to after-hours call out for emergency situations 13. Perform other duties and provide assistance to other city departments as required or assigned 14. This position is considered essential during a natural or manmade disaster and/or a catastrophic event. This position may be required to provide services or perform duties for the benefit of the public and continuity of City operations. These may include services or duties different from those performed in the usual course and scope of this position Physical Demands and Working Environment (The physical demands and environmental conditions described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions) Work requires sufficient physical strength, agility, dexterity, and hand-eye-foot coordination to perform all essential functions. Hear clearly when working around equipment and in traffic, using proper safety precautions. Duties also require frequent sitting, walking, kneeling, squatting, pushing, pulling, twisting, and bending. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and may be required to occasionally lift and/or move 150 pounds or more. Work also requires employee to climb and work from ladders and supports up to heights of 45 feet. Work is performed primarily outdoors and exposes employee to potential hazards such as extreme weather conditions, dust, noise, and exhaust fumes. Employee is also exposed to potential physical hazards when working off ladders and supports, and to potential chemical hazards when handling and applying chemicals. Work requires the frequent use of safety clothing and equipment and compliance with safety rules and procedures. Work is subject to frequent interruptions Minimum Qualifications Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines: High School diploma or GED equivalent One (1) year of experience in the construction, operation, and maintenance of parks and recreation, streets, drainage, and building and equipment maintenance department preferred Backhoe/heavy equipment operator experience preferred Or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Ability to interpret and understand the city policies and procedures Knowledgeable in the water distribution system, wastewater collection system, gas distribution system and storm drain system line locations Comprehensive knowledge of park maintenance and construction. Comprehensive knowledge of and proficient in, the use and operation of tools and equipment required in maintenance and repair activities. (Mowers, edger, standard hand tools, operation of light power-driven equipment, trucks, and other vehicles. Working knowledge of procedures and techniques used in cleaning, maintenance and repair) Knowledge of City geography, streets, landmarks, and facility locations. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships Ability to use problem solving skills Ability to perform all the physical requirements of the position with or without an accommodation License, Certifications, and Other Requirements: Valid Texas Class C Driver's License and must meet City's driving standards o CDL preferred Must have the ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen, physical examination, criminal background, and MVR check
