CLASSIFIED POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Head Custodian
FACILITY: Hardin Community Activity Center (HCAC)
REPORTS TO: Manager of Pool Operations / Maintenance Director
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The person in this position maintains the Hardin Community Activity Center as a healthy and safe environment through cleaning and maintenance according to both School District and State Department of Public Health Guidelines.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
Maintains receiving area, locker / shower rooms, pool deck, and exercise area in a healthy and safe condition for the general public and school district
Maintains inventory of custodial / maintenance supplies and equipment
Prepares Order for custodial /maintenance needs and stores items accordingly
Cleans and preserves designated spaces, equipment etc. in the building
Operates common power cleaning equipment and hand cleaning tools. Uses chemicals and cleaning solvents in a safe and effective manner
Keeps tools and equipment clean and operational
Keeps exercise area and equipment clean and functional
Performs ongoing preventative maintenance and minor repairs on plumbing, custodial equipment, locker / shower room stalls, building structure and lighting fixtures
Maintains performance checks and changing time of building clocks
Maintains all building equipment, furniture, desks and chairs, and tables in safe usable manner

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION:
High School Diploma, GED or equivalent
EXPERIENCE:
Certified Pool Spa Operator Preferred
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:
Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in cleaning various types of surfaces and furniture
Knowledge of basic safety practices related to custodial work
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, building staff and school community
Ability to perform heavy physical labor
Ability to operate specialized cleaning and maintenance tools and equipment
Ability to work in heights over 12’
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
Ability to understand and carryout oral and written directions and instructions
Ability to understand and follow a work schedule
Ability to work effectively without close supervision
Ability to keep basic work records and make reports
Ability to effectively manage time and responsibilities
Ability to effectively communicate, orally and in writing
Ability to handle stressful situations
Ability to maintain confidentiality of employee and student matters
Ability to perform duties with an awareness of all District requirements and Board policies
EQUIPMENT USED:
Cleaning and maintenance tools and equipment, including but not limited to Kaivac cleaning machine, electrical hand tools, power washer, Geni Lift.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
May give non-supervisory direction to other staff. May be responsible for directing or instructing occasional community service assistant.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this position, the employee regularly works inside in a humid atmosphere. The employee must be able to meet deadlines with time constraints.
The employee is frequently required to walk, stand, bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, stretch, push heavy equipment, lift and carry equipment and objects. Employee must be able to lift and / or carry up to 50 pounds. Must have dexterity of hands and fingers to grasp objects. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee is required to be able to speak and to hear and to exchange information.
While performing the duties of this position, the employee will often perform routine work. The employee frequently exercises flexibility (ability to shift from one task to another). The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. Guidance and reinforcement are usually available. The employee may be involved in social interactions which require oral and written communications.

Community:
Big Horn County, Montana is rich in history, culture and time-honored traditions. It Includes the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Reservations. Hardin (county seat) is situated on the banks of the Bighorn River and the edge of the Crow Reservation. The town is surrounded by productive farms and ranches. Coal mining has also contributed greatly to the local economy. Hardin, is located 46 miles southeast of Billings (largest city in the State) by way of Interstate 90. The Big Horn County Museum, Little Big Horn Battlefield and Chief Plenty Coups State Park provide interesting and important history of the area. The scenic Big Horn, Pryor and Wolf Mountain ranges are part of the Big Horn County landscape. Yellowtail Dam offers a majestic view of the water below. The spectacular Big Horn Canyon National Recreation Area is host to water sports. This area of Big Sky Country also offers fishing, hunting, hiking, snowmobiling, camping, etc. for the outdoor enthusiast. Annual events in Big Horn County include: Little Big Horn Days, Native Days, Crow Fair & Rodeos.
