Catlin Gabel School is seeking a skilled and proactive HVAC Building Systems Technician to join our community. In this critical role, you'll be responsible for the maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization of our campus-wide HVAC and mechanical systems , helping ensure a safe, comfortable, and energy-efficient learning environment for students and staff.

This is a hands-on, HVAC-focused position ideal for someone with strong technical knowledge, attention to detail, and a commitment to service. Youll lead the operation and upkeep of boilers, chillers, cooling towers, and control systems, while also supporting general facilities maintenance as needed.

Primary Responsibilities HVAC Focus
  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair HVAC equipment, including air conditioning units, hot water boilers, cooling towers, and treatment systems.

  • Conduct scheduled preventive maintenance on HVAC systems and components.

  • Repair or replace malfunctioning parts (e.g., thermostats, compressors, heat exchangers, dampers, relays, valves, motors, etc.).

  • Operate and maintain HVAC tools, diagnostic equipment, and related inventory.

  • If licensed, perform electrical work related to HVAC systems and motor connections.

  • Monitor boiler operations; schedule service as needed.

  • Learn and use the Climatec Automated Logic WEB CTRL energy management system to monitor and adjust HVAC operations.

  • Maintain detailed logs of maintenance activities and troubleshooting records.

  • Follow all campus safety procedures and contribute to a safe working environment.

Additional Facilities Support
  • Perform general maintenance duties including minor plumbing, carpentry, electrical work, and painting.

  • Use FMX work order system to track and respond to maintenance requests.

  • Help maintain an organized inventory of supplies and tools.

  • Assist with campus safety checks, seasonal prep, and vendor coordination.

Additional Expectations
  • Conduct research on replacement parts and updated HVAC technologies.

  • Support the broader Catlin Gabel community by participating in meetings, events, and professional development.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Facilities.

INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS

  • This role requires daily interaction and cooperation with the Facilities Team, faculty, and staff.

  • There is occasional contact with students, parents, other school related constituents, and visitors.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Minimum 2 years of HVAC journeyman-level experience in maintenance, repair, and system operations.

  • Valid Oregon Drivers License with a clean driving record.

  • LME license and OSHA Safety Training certifications strongly preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical demands outlined below are representative of those typically required for this role but may not include all possible conditions. Candidates must be able to perform essential job duties with or without reasonable accommodation . Work is primarily performed across multiple buildings on the school campus, with some outdoor tasks required as needed .

  • Frequent mobility across campus , including navigating stairs, hills, and multiple building levelson foot or via campus vehiclesthroughout the workday.

  • Regular work in confined spaces or at heights , including from platforms and ladders. Duties often involve bending, squatting, stooping, lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying, and kneeling.

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds for short distances, including moving equipment, furniture, ladders, and tools.

  • Frequent exposure to HVAC-related substances , such as lubricants, cleaning agents, and refrigerants.

  • Must be able to work safely around moving machinery , and in environments with variable noise levels, temperature fluctuations, humidity, dust, fumes, and gases.

  • Outdoor work is required during various weather conditions, including inclement weather when needed.

SCHEDULE

This is a year-round, full-time position at 40 hours per week. The role includes on-call responsibilities for remote HVAC monitoring and both remote and on-site troubleshooting . Specific workdays and hours will be determined by the Director of Facilities. Occasional mandatory evening and weekend overtime may be required.

All Facilities team members are considered essential staff and are expected to respond during emergencies and inclement weather conditions, including power outages and snow or ice removal.
