JOB PURPOSE: The COOP/Sagehen Barista contributes to Pomona Dining services success by providing legendary customer service to all customers. This job creates a unique experience for our customers by providing customers with prompt service, quality beverages and food products. The Barista operates the full coffee bar, dining room food delivery and the cash register at assigned POS to receive payments of cash, credit card, Claremont Cash, and Board Plus according to the Colleges money handling and Point of Sale cashiering system procedures. The Barista is responsible for knowing the appropriate meal prices for each period, handling and safeguarding funds received, and verifying that cash drawer count is correct and has been deposited into safe. This position is certified as a California Food Handler to restock and heat up coffee beverage and meal products, clean dining room and prep work for next service.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Reporting directly to the Chef Manager and secondarily to the Dining Manager(s), the Barista performs the following essential duties and responsibilities:
1. Provide excellent and professional customer service to students, faculty, staff, and external customers. Respond promptly to customer needs and questions and request assistance when necessary.
2. Follows College operational policies and procedures, including those for cash handling, safety and security, to ensure the safety for all partners during each shift.
3. Provides quality beverages, whole bean, and food products consistently for all customers by adhering to all recipe and presentation standards.
4. Must be California Food Handler certified, and successfully recertify every 3 years.
5. Prepare full coffee bar, menu items and restocks product before, during, and after each meal period as needed.
6. Assists with new student workers training by positively reinforcing successful performance and giving respectful and encouraging support as needed.
7. Maintains a clean and organized workspace so that partners can locate resources and product as needed, cleaning assignments as needed.
8. Follow and comply with all applicable health and sanitation procedures and adhere to safe work practices.
9. Participate in training sessions provided by the College.
10. Perform special projects/tasks/duties and provide assistance as assigned.
NOTE: This position is represented by a labor union. Employees must join union upon hire.
QUALIFICATIONS:Education: Any combination of education, training and/or experience equivalent to High School Diploma or GED that provides the required knowledge, skills and ability.
Licenses/Certificates: Must take and successfully pass the California Food Handler Certification within 30 days of hire and successfully recertify every 3 years. A valid drivers license is essential to drive College-owned vehicles. Must take and successfully pass a functional capacity test after job offer and prior to hire.
Experience: Experience with cashiering assignments at an academic institution is preferred.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND CRITICAL SKILLS: This position must possess the knowledge, skills and abilities to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the job or must be able to demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed (with or without reasonable accommodation) using other knowledge, skills and abilities not listed below.
1. Deploy professional skills in cashiering and customer service, in collaboration with colleagues, to best promote the Colleges strategic interests.
a. Must operate cash registers and Point of Sale cashiering systems.
b. Can maintain a friendly, professional and helpful demeanor around staff and customers to deliver superior customer service and food services to the Pomona College community and the general public.
c. Must follow money handling procedures and count out money accurately.
2. Demonstrate effective, accurate and clear communication with strong verbal, written, interpersonal, reading, phone, and customer service skills. Follow all written and verbal instructions, asking questions as needed for clarification of projects/tasks/duties/assignments.
3. Operate computers proficiently with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, Outlook) and associated professional software (such as Point of Sale cashiering systems). Use assigned technology/devices/equipment to achieve annual goals and maintain confidentiality.
4. Handle all activities with patience, discretion, good judgment, and tact while working with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.
5. Prioritize and perform multiple projects/tasks, meet deadlines/timelines, respond to others in a timely manner, and work both independently and as a collaborative member of the College with a high standard of integrity and ethics, in support of the Colleges strategic vision and
the divisions/departments annual goals.
6. Prepare food and beverages to standard recipe or customized for customers, including recipe changes such as temperature, quantity of ingredients or substituted ingredients.
7. Must safely lift and move supplies and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and walk and stand for long periods of time.
8. Must report to work on time and in uniform at the start of each shift.
REQUIRED HOURS: The regular hours for this full time position are 40 hours per week, 5 days per week, on a variable schedule. Overtime, holiday, weekend and evening work hours will be required. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College or division. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule.

Salary : $26.18 per hour
