The East Hartford Public Library is seeking a dedicated Part-Time Library Assistant to join our Circulation Department. This role involves providing excellent customer service, performing filing and shelving tasks, and ensuring that library materials are properly organized. The position works under the general supervision of the Assistant Library Director.

Position Details:

  • Type: Part-time
  • Hours: 7 11 hours per week
  • Availability: Must include evenings and/or weekends: Saturdays (10 AM 2 PM), Sundays (1 PM 5 PM)
  • Pay Rate: $ 18 -$21.50 per hour depending on qualifications
  • Reports To: Assistant Library Director

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide customer service in the Circulation Department, including issuing and renewing library cards, checking library materials in and out, and assisting patrons with the self-check machine.
  • Perform filing and shelving tasks.
  • Check shelves to ensure materials are filed properly and conduct shelf-reading as required.
  • Crosstrain in other departments as needed.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to interact with employees and the public in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Literacy Skills: Ability to read, write, and keyboard information.
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to pay close attention to detail.
  • Technical Proficiency: Working knowledge of public computing environments.
  • Organizational Skills: Ability to file numerically and alphabetically.
  • Conflict Resolution: Skill in resolving confidential and sensitive situations.
  • Education: High school graduate or GED.
  • Experience: One year of related experience is preferred (library or retail).
  • Language Skills: Bilingual (Spanish) is preferred.
