This is a non-exempt position which requires semi-skilled manual work in the performance of light and heavy manual labor of more than average difficulty in the construction, landscaping, maintenance, and repair of properties and grounds for various municipal departments of the City of Plantation.
Employees are hired as AT WILL employees that serve at the pleasure of the City and may be terminated at any time with or without cause.
Essential Job Functions
Removes fallen trees from roadways and park areas; trims branches to preserve visibility of traffic control devices and to improve landscape appearance.
Operates wood chippers and stump grinders.
Install Temporary Traffic Control for safety.
Follows and teaches the team of safe work practices to eliminate & mitigate hazardous conditions & behaviors at the work environment.
Prunes trees from the ground with a power pruner and a bucket truck to eliminate hazards and preserve the beauty of the trees on municipal streets and city property.
Ensures a high level of customer service and safety for all persons within the assigned areas.
Safely operates various size and weight vehicles, maintenance equipment and power tools used in the completion of assigned tasks.
Operates sprayers and related equipment for weed and pest control.
Installs trees and shrubbery to maintain landscaping throughout the city and trims and fertilizes trees, shrubbery, lawns and sport fields as needed.
Semi-skilled landscaping tasks in performing general maintenance of municipal buildings, equipment, and property.
Performs routine inspection and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment; refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor.
Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by checking and cleaning equipment and tools after each use
Supervises and manages personnel of lower classifications.
Assists higher-level tradesmen in the accomplishment of varied skilled trade projects.
Performs miscellaneous pick-ups and deliveries of errands as required.
Exercises care and safety in use of equipment and tools required to complete assigned tasks and knowledge of safety rules and regulations prescribed by the city.
Executes purchase orders authorized by the department director.
Performs related work as required and as directed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to operate truck with hydraulic lifts, small tractors, skid steers, small rollers, power tools and equipment
Knowledge of tools and various equipment used in landscape maintenance, general ground maintenance, and athletic field maintenance and construction, such as mowers, edgers, weed eaters, Chainsaws, trimming hand tools, etc.
Knowledge of tree trimming methods and relevant safety precautions.
Knowledge of principles and fundamentals of horticultural and plant nurseries.
Knowledge of landscape maintenance and new installation experience.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards of the trade and of the proper use of safety practices.
Skill in written and verbal communication.
Skill in the use of common hand tools and mechanical equipment.
Ability to perform general care to lawns and grounds.
Ability to operate assigned equipment safely and effectively.
Ability to plant and fertilize trees, shrubbery, and lawns.
Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays and evenings, as required.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, often under hot and humid conditions.
Ability to understand and carry out instructions and to complete work assignments correctly.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with city officials, other city departments, fellow employees, supervisors, outside agencies, and the general public.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent; supplemented by a minimum of 2 year of experience in ground, street, and/or landscape maintenance or construction; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Licenses and Certifications:
Must have a valid Florida driver's license with satisfactory driving record throughout employment. Must have or be able to obtain a Class B commercial driver's license with air brake endorsement within the (1) year probationary period. Certified Arborist, Commercial Landscape Maintenance Applicator, and Ornamental and/or Certified Horticulture Professional designations preferred, depending on area of assignment. May be required to have or obtain additional formal industry certification(s) based on area of assignment.
Physical Demands
The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires the ability to balance, climb, crawl, crouch, lift and/or carry and push/pull various objects.Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor environment and requires travel from site to site.
