TITLE: Custodian
QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or GED
Certification of good health signed by a licensed physician
Successful work experience in organizing own time, demonstrated mechanical ability, and manual dexterity
Other alternative qualifications the Board may find appropriate
REPORTS TO: Head Maintenance & Head Custodian
SUPERVISES: Temporary Workers
JOB GOAL: To promote and maintain the safety, health, cleanliness, and comfort of students, employees, and the public by keeping buildings and premises neat, clean, and in good repair at all times.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Keeps buildings and premises neat and clean at all times.
- Sweeps/vacuums classrooms daily and dusts furniture weekly.
- Cleans corridors after school each day and during the day when conditions require it.
- Scrubs and disinfects toilets, bathroom floors, sanitary fixtures, sinks, and drinking fountains daily.
- Washes all windows on the inside and outside as needed.
- Keeps all floors in a neat and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.
- Cleans all chalkboards as scheduled.
- Reports major repairs needed.
- Reports immediately to supervisor any damage to school property.
- Remains on the school premises during assigned hours and during non-school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and attendance is required by the housekeeping director.
- Assumes responsibility for the closing of the building each school day and for determining that all doors and windows are secured and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off.
- Moves furniture or equipment within building as required for various activities.
- Performs all duties as assigned by the Housekeeping Director or Principal.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Manual dexterity as required for handling all equipment.
- Stand for prolonged periods of time.
- Perform duties requiring repetitive movements such as twisting of the wrist, elbow and arm extension.
- Bending, walking, stairs, crouching, carrying and reaching.
- Push/pull heavy loads using a cart or 2-wheel dolly.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted; job responsibility may vary from light to very heavy depending upon the day.
- Frequent exposure to wet and/or slick surfaces.
- Tolerant to frequent and extreme temperature changes.
- Drug, tobacco, alcohol free while working.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and work year to be determined by the Board.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated by the Head Maintenance and Head Custodian in
accordance with Board policy.
