Serve as a Crew Leader coordinating various construction, repair and preservation activities of roads within Aiken County ensuring that all work performed is recorded in the maintenance date management system. Performs On-Call duties as needed. Operates heavy equipment such as but not limited to backhoes, motor graders, and slope mowers to perform routine maintenance on state highway right of ways. Works with a crew of maintenance employees utilizing proper maintenance techniques, while performing duties using manual labor during roadway and rights of way maintenance activities. Areas of work may include, but are not limited to, signage and pavement markings, driveway installation and maintenance, construction of drainage appurtenances, litter/debris removal, vegetation management, bridge maintenance, and patching/paving. Instructs crew members of daily safety practices such as flagging operations, wearing safety equipment, vehicle/equipment safety, and job site hazards. Conducts and documents pre-trip equipment/vehicle inspection in accordance with the Department's most current rules, policies and procedures for fleet safety. Flags traffic in low and high volume areas to control flow of traffic for safety of workers, equipment and general public during operations. Performs proper placement of traffic control devices in accordance with the MUTCD manual. Maintains working knowledge and practices of Work Zone safety in accordance with the MUTCD. Operates small equipment, power tools, and hand tools to perform assigned maintenance activities. Operates standard dump truck while hauling material, supplies, and equipment to and from job sites. Operates standard dump truck with snow plow attachment and salt spreader to remove snow and ice from roadways and bridges. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Two (2) years of related work experience or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operators license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
