This position will serve as County Maintenance Engineer for Pitt County. Employee in this position will be expected to manage, plan, and supervise all road maintenance and force account construction for Pitt County in accordance with established policies and procedures. The selected candidate should have considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of Civil Engineering and highway maintenance methods and techniques. Selected candidate should have considerable knowledge of the use and operations of all field and office engineering instruments, ability to understand, explain and administer contracts, ability to interpret plans, provisions and specifications, ability to interpret policies, procedures and regulations. Employee will be expected to establish working relationships between the Department and citizens.

Management prefers applicants that demonstrate the following:

  • Experience in the management of multiple projects and scheduling and directing multiple work crews
  • Experience in the use of professional engineering skills and knowledge to troubleshoot and solve highway maintenance problems
  • Experience in tracking cost expenditures in various account systems on multiple large projects
  • Customer service experience related to resolving problems that involve explaining engineering concepts to various customer groups

Additional Expectations:

Employee in this position will use professional engineering skills and knowledge to solve difficult highway maintenance problems and to accomplish force account construction projects. Employee in this position will supervise and monitor highway maintenance program to ensure efficient and safe use of personnel, equipment, and materials. Employee must have the ability to formulate a comprehensive highway maintenance program within the limits of budget and data. Employee must supervise and evaluate the performance of other employees and must be able to effectively communicate and maintain positive working relationships with the general public, local governments, fellow employees, etc. Employee must be able to operate a motor vehicle and make field investigations on uneven terrain, including steep slopes and work in extreme conditions such as ice, snow, dust, extreme heat and cold. Employee in this position will be expected to wear safety toe footwear. A valid North Carolina driver license is preferred.

Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
