County Maintenance Engineer

The employee in this position will serve as the County Maintenance Engineer for Hyde, Tyrrell, and Washington counties in Division One. This position will be responsible for all maintenance and force account construction activities in Hyde, Tyrrell, and Washington counties in accordance with established policies and procedures.

The employee in this position will supervise and monitor maintenance programs to ensure efficient and safe use of personnel, equipment, and materials; accomplish force account and construction projects; formulate a comprehensive highway maintenance program within limits of budget; supervise and evaluate the performance of other employees; and communicate effectively and maintain working relationships with the public, local governments, fellow employees, etc.

Management prefers applicants that demonstrate the following:

  • Experience in the management of multiple projects and scheduling and directing multiple work crews
  • Experience in the use of professional engineering skills and knowledge to troubleshoot and solve highway maintenance problems
  • Experience in tracking cost expenditures in various account systems on multiple large projects
  • Customer service experience related to resolving problems that involve explaining engineering concepts to various customer groups
  • Experience conducting meetings with employees, citizens, and public officials to perform investigations and resolve various issues

Additional Expectations:

Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of Civil Engineering and highway maintenance. Considerable knowledge of all field and office engineering instruments. Ability to understand, explain, and administer contracts. Ability to interpret policies, procedures, and regulations. Ability to establish effective working relationships between the department and citizens. Must use professional engineering skills and knowledge to solve highway problems. Must be able to make field investigations on unlevel terrain, including steep slopes and work in extreme conditions such as ice, snow, dust, and extreme heat and cold. Must be available as necessary to manage staff seven days per week, 24 hours a day. Must be able to legally operate a State vehicle. Safety toe shoes are required.

Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification:

May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
