Position Summary: Reporting to the Kitchen Supervisor, the Prep, Cook plays a vital role in food preparation and service for our student, faculty, and staff lunch program, and for other catered and special events.
Specific Duties Include:
Follow daily assignments and food prep tasks created by the Supervisor and Lead Cook
Following recipes and production data, measure ingredients to be used in cooking
Using excellent knife skills and various kitchen equipment, prepare ingredients by employing techniques such as peeling, chopping, dicing, slicing, and mixing of vegetables and fruits, and cutting meat and fish
Carry out basic cooking procedures, such as grilling, steaming, and frying items
Prepare simple dishes, such as salads, entree items, soups, and sauces
Make efficient usage of food items, meeting production needs and minimizing waste
Line serving or food backup during the lunch period each day, and engaging with our students and faculty in a positive, friendly manner
Ensure the correct cooling, dating, and storage of leftover food
Maintain a clean and sanitary department in compliance with ServSafe regulations
Help to maintain the organization and cleanliness of walk-in coolers and freezers
Act as the back-up for other cooks when they are absent from the unit
Help in the dish room or carry out other utilities duties, as needed
Participate in other dining activities. This includes occasional evening and weekend overtime to help with special catered events, participating in training, etc
Other duties as assigned
Required Skills:
Proven experience as a prep cook, preferably for at least a year in a large volume foodservice operation
Ability to follow directions, communicate well with others, and stay focused and positive under pressure
Attention to detail
Knowledge of health and kitchen safety rules. Current ServSafe certification will be an asset
Physical endurance and the ability to stand for long periods. Ability to reach above shoulder height, stoop, bend below the waist, and twist at the waist. Manual dexterity to operate knives and kitchen equipment. A keen sense of taste and smell
Ability to work in a noisy kitchen environment
Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds in weight
Minimum Job Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent is desirable. Training from a culinary school will be an asset
Basic math skills
A GA Driver's license would be beneficial
The Prep Cook, Dining Services position is a full-time time non-exempt, twelve-month position.
