Job Description

Cocktail Server

1. Our Brand Mission & Culture –

Nestled in Nashville’s heart since 1910, “the Hermitage Hotel”—Nashville’s original milliondollar landmark and the storied backdrop of generations of gatherings—continues to uphold its timeless motto: “Meet me at The Hermitage.” A National Historic Landmark since 2020, our iconic Beaux Arts architecture connects history and modern luxury under one welcoming roof.

Guided by Our Mission—our commitment to exceptional hospitality through highly personalized service delivered by exceptional staff—and shaped by six core values, we set the gold standard across luxury hospitality:

  • Excellence – we continually raise the bar, surprising and delighting guests with poise and polish.
  • Accountability – we take ownership of our goals, informed decisions, and guest satisfaction.
  • Integrity – we act with consistent character, in every interaction, whether seen or unseen.
  • Teamwork – we support one another in service, honesty, and respect, attending thoughtfully to every guest and teammate.
  • Tradition – we honor the hotel’s legacy by ensuring our historic reputation grows brighter.
  • Community – we are invested in Nashville’s well-being and continue our role in civic enrichment.

Our centuryplus evolution includes a respectful 2021–2022 restoration that refreshed our 122 suites while preserving arresting features like the marble lobby and stained-glass ceiling—alongside the debut of refined dining experiences shaped by Michelin-starred Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten.

Why you'll thrive here:
When you join us, you become part of a team committed to preserving a cherished landmark and shaping its future—offering competitive wages, comprehensive benefits, and a professionally rewarding environment where growth, collaboration, and pride in legacy go hand in hand.

2. Position Overview

As a Cocktail Server at The Hermitage Hotel, you deliver refined beverage hospitality within Nashville’s grand Beaux-Arts landmark—where architectural opulence, storied history, and culinary artistry converge. From your station at Drusie & Darr or The Pink Hermit, each drink becomes a gesture of Southern charm infused with Jean-Georges inspired elegance. Here, gracious service isn’t just expected—it’s part of our cultural heritage.

3. Key Responsibilities

  • Warm Guest Reception & Beverage Guidance

Greet guests with poise and offer bespoke drink recommendations that elevate their experience.

  • Curated Beverage Expertise

Maintain deep knowledge of cocktails, wine, and non-alcoholics, crafting informed suggestions with tailored nuance.

  • Precision Order Management

Process orders accurately via POS systems and ensure swift, flawless delivery.

  • Synergistic Team Collaboration

Coordinate seamlessly with bartenders, servers, and chefs to sustain polished, uninterrupted service.

  • Ambiance & Presentation Stewardship

Uphold cleanliness and presentation—spotless glassware, pristine garnishes, and refined service areas.

  • Proactive Guest Engagement

Monitor guest satisfaction and promptly address any needs or concerns with professionalism.

  • Regulatory Compliance

Adhere to responsible beverage service standards and food safety protocols consistently.

  • Brand-Aligned Strategic Execution

Support and embody brand-level initiatives with discretion, flexibility, and unwavering commitment to service excellence.

4. Competency & Requirements

Required

  • At least 2years of elevated beverage service experience in luxury hotels or refined restaurant environments.
  • Accredited beverage qualification (e.g., WSET Level 2, CMS Intro), plus responsible alcohol service and food handler certifications.
  • Skilled use of POS, inventory, reservation, and digital payment tools.
  • Fluent in English; multilingual skills (French, Spanish, Mandarin, Arabic) strongly preferred.
  • Flexible availability for evenings, weekends, holidays, and busy periods; must be 21+.

Soft Skills & Behavioral Competencies

  • Empathetic Anticipation: Recognize subtle cues—like a fingertip on the glass—to offer service before asked.
  • Narrative Beverage Storytelling: Describe cocktails and pairings with clarity and confidence.
  • Guest Personalization: Remember repeat patrons’ preferences to build connection.
  • Impeccable Presentation: Serve with elegance—spotless glassware, balanced garnishes, and silent precision.
  • Time Mastery & Multitasking: Serve multiple tables while smoothly coordinating with bar and kitchen.
  • Composure Under Pressure: Maintain grace and accuracy during bustling or VIP service moments.
  • Integrated Team Coordination: Work in sync with sommeliers, bartenders, and leads via subtle communication.
  • Tactful Upselling: Offer additional pairings or digestifs with subtlety and finesse.
  • Discreet Professional Presence: Respect guest privacy with understated poise throughout service.

Preferred Extras

  • Experience in Michelin-rated or high-luxury hospitality venues.
  • Advanced certifications (e.g., WSET Level 3/Diploma, CMS Certified, CSE, Cicerone).
  • Mixology or tableside theater skills—flaming cocktails, guéridon service, etc.
  • Deep familiarity with local and artisan beverage producers for storytelling.
  • Membership in professional beverage organizations (e.g., GuildSomm, Cicerone Program).
