Parks Maintenance Worker I Trails - Part-time

Nature of Work

Responsible for providing skilled to semi-skilled activities in maintaining and constructing paved and natural surface trails, trail corridors, and trailside facilities/landscaped areas. Work responsibilities may extend to special work assignments, including field data collection, invasive weed management, and construction projects. Work is performed under the general direction of the Trails Coordinator or other supervisory employee.

Essential Functions of Work

General Duties

  • Monitors trails for vandalism; removes trailside trash, repairs vandalism, and removes graffiti.
  • Removes leaves, gravel, ice, and snow from the trail.
  • Performs minor repairs to buildings and facilities; installs and removes signs; maintains trail equipment.
  • Works with and assists skilled trades' personnel on various carpentry, plumbing, and irrigation system projects.
  • Maintenance and cleaning of Park buildings and trail facilities.

Pavement Maintenance

  • Maintains asphalt, cement, and natural surface trails. Prepares, pours, and smooths asphalt sealant and pothole patches.
  • Maintains and cleans pavement maintenance equipment

Landscaping

  • Trims grass and sprays weeds; waters trees and landscaped areas; applies pesticides; assists with landscaping maintenance and installation.
  • Trims trees and brush to maintain trail corridor

Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of experience in parks, building and grounds maintenance.

NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Candidate must possess or have the ability to obtain valid Montana driver's license

Requirements of Work

  • Working knowledge of landscaping and grounds maintenance.
  • Working knowledge of pesticides.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions efficiently and effectively.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, supervisors, and the general public.
  • Working knowledge of methods and equipment used in building cleaning and maintenance.
  • Ability to operate a wide variety of equipment such as mowers, weed eaters, skid steers, backhoes, mini-excavators, and other machinery. This list is not comprehensive and other equipment may be utilized for park maintenance. Training on equipment will be provided, if required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position does not supervise staff.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions and is exposed to cold, heat, noise, dust, vibration, chemicals, and mechanical hazards.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, bend, twist, reach, ride and perform similar body movements. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move over 50 pounds. Possess hand/eye coordination sufficient to operate maintenance equipment, hand and power tools, and a motor vehicle; the ability to talk and hear in person or by telephone or two way radio; and the ability to see and read instructions and reports.

EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

The work schedule is a 29-hour work week, Sunday through Saturday. Work is typically performed Monday through Friday. This position is non-exempt and eligible for overtime. Any overtime must be authorized prior to working.

TRAVEL

Travel is primarily local during the business day. Occasional travel may be required to attend off-site training and educational opportunities.
