Mamalehs is hiring a Line Cook! This position is responsible for working a station as a member of a team. They will do prep, set up and break down a station, work service, and help clean the kitchen at the end of service. As a cook (sandwich maker) you will:

  • Learn about Jewish cuisine from an authentic Jewish deli
  • Make people smile while feeding their bellies and soul
  • Schmear our homemade, hand-rolled bagels
  • Hand slice nova lox
  • Bake cookies and set up delicious deli desserts
  • Build classic Reubens and Rachels
  • Assemble egg sandwiches on our fluffy challah rolls

This position is divided into Cook 3, Cook 2 and Cook 1, with those in the Cook 3 and Cook 2 positions having the opportunity to advance through to the Cook 1 position.

Responsibilities and Expectations for Cook 1: Things are often changing with the business as this style of service is new and we are adapting. The following is a list of current responsibilities:

  • Follow recipes
  • Stay up to date on menu changes
  • Participate in the preparation of new menu items
  • Help bake and restock pastries
  • Work independently from a list of duties as needed
  • Work collaboratively with BOH staff and FOH staff
  • Assist the Kitchen Manager in the training of new kitchen employees
  • Hone existing skills while learning new techniques and building skill set
  • Maintain cleanliness of station
  • Be a source of positivity for the staff with a yes we can attitude
  • Strong communication skills to convey needs to Kitchen Manager and teammates and ability to interact in a professional manner
  • Able to maintain a sense of urgency and comfort in a fast-paced environment
  • Maintain cleanliness of any BOH work areas, including and not limited to refrigeration, cooking equipment, and prep areas
  • Participate in deep cleaning of BOH work areas, including and not limited to refrigeration, cooking equipment, and prep areas
  • Work one station on the line during service independently
  • Set up & breakdown of station
  • Keep up with station prep and associated projects
  • Capable of working multiple stations
  • Work quickly efficiently while maintaining a clean work station
  • Knowledgeable about most kitchen recipes and systems
  • 2 years restaurant cooking experience, or proven capability

Skills and Requirements:

  • General knife handling, food safety & sanitation knowledge
  • Work well with direction, but able to take initiative and be independent
  • Able to take constructive criticism, learn quickly and constantly improve
  • Have experience following recipes, troubleshooting, and thinking critically
  • Positive, friendly and eager to learn
  • Able to stay positive and calm under pressure
  • Work collaboratively with BOH staff and FOH staff
  • Able to maintain mental athleticism and coordination of tickets and sending out plates
  • Stay up to date on menu changes
  • Participate in the preparation of new menu items
  • Strong communication skills to convey needs to Kitchen Manager and teammates and ability to interact in a professional manner
  • Able to maintain and ensure proper plate presentation and cleanliness

Physical Demands:

  • The physical demands for this position are seeing, hearing, speaking, reaching, lifting up to 50 pounds, standing for 10 hours, bending, going up and down the stairs multiple times a day with heavy loads, and moving intermittently during working hours. These physical requirements may be accomplished with or without reasonable accommodations.
