Position Title: Line Server/Catering

Department : Dining Services Supervisor : General Manager, Dining Services

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

This is a bargaining unit position. Union dues are required.

Line Server (primary)

  • Assist in serving food during meal periods.
  • Coordinate the set up for meals including the entrees, deli, salad bar, beverage station, dessert station, and serving utensils, to ensure that all are well stocked, clean and well merchandised.
  • Verify that the dining room is clean and that all tables and chairs are wiped down. Confirm that all menu signage is in place, that the tray return is clean and evaluate other house standards as required.
  • Coordinate customer service efforts during mealtimes including greeting customers, restocking stations, cleanliness, and traffic flow.
  • Coordinate clean-up efforts of all the stations in the server and dining room at the conclusion of the meal. Ensure that all areas are properly broken down, cleaned and sanitized.
  • Seek feedback from customers as to their thoughts about the given meal and any other ideas they may wish to share.
  • Perform other essential duties as tasks specific to the position.

Catering (secondary, when needed)

  • Provide full support for catering event presentations, including order preparation, delivery, set-up, serving, clean-up, break-down and pick-up.
  • May be asked to assist with light preparation of hors doeuvres, sandwiches, deli plates/platters, and salads.
  • Assemble all food, beverages, and supplies according to event contracts and catering checklists; deliver all food, beverages, and supplies for catered functions to scheduled locations on a timely basis.
  • Displays foods under appropriate hot or cold as per standards.
  • Responsible for ensuring proper presentation, portion control, and maintenance of proper serving temperatures-follows HACCP standards.
  • Maintain sanitation and orderliness of all equipment, supplies and utensils within work area.
  • Cleans equipment, as assigned and in a timely fashion.
  • Demonstrates a complete understanding of daily menu items and explains same to customers accurately.
  • Relays relevant comments from customers directly to supervisors.
  • Ensures corporate and OSHA safety standards are followed.
  • Maintains professional appearance all times, clean and well groomed in accordance with the company standards.
  • Ensure that event presentations are clean, well-stocked, consistently and attractively displayed, and adhere to the quality standards of the department.

    All contract items are present with necessary signage and service ware;

    Linens are evenly and neatly placed on tables;

    Buffets and tables are well organized;

    Appropriate food decor is attractively placed on buffet; and

    Back-up supplies are stored out of guests site.

  • Greet guests courteously and interact with guests in a manner to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Resolve guest concerns in a friendly and service oriented manner, relaying issues and relevant comments from customers directly to a manager, and seeking manager assistance when necessary.
  • Demonstrates a complete understanding of menu items and explain menu items to customers accurately. Relay all allergen concerns and questions to a manager.
  • Serve and attend to guests quickly and efficiently during events to provide excellent customer service.

    Restock and maintain buffets as needed.

    Keep display equipment, buffets and tables clean and free of debris during event meal service.

    Wait on guests, serve food and beverages, answer questions regarding food served at the event and address special requests with a manager as needed.

  • Clean-up, break-down, and pick-up events.

    Cleans and packs unused food and beverages, dishes, utensils and equipment for removal to appropriate locations.

    Return all food and beverages (including food decor items) to the kitchen.

    Return all soiled linens to linen hampers, and all soiled dishes, cups, utensils, service ware, and other appropriate equipment to the dish room for cleaning.

    Return all other supplies (i.e. signage, excess linen, napkins, risers, etc.) to catering storage areas.

    Handle trash and waste properly per department and College standards.

    Clean tables and chairs, as assigned, before, during, and after meal service.

  • Clean and organize catering stations, storerooms, and vehicles. Clean glassware, silverware and other supplies and equipment as needed and as instructed by a manager.
  • Consistently keep up with catering delivery schedules calmly, accurately and efficiently.
  • Work with minimal supervision to support smaller events as needed.
  • Drive the catering van and electric cart as needed for deliveries and pick-ups.
  • Perform other essential duties and tasks specific to the position.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

The individual must possess knowledge, skills and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions in English. Bilingual in Spanish is desirable.
  • Ability to work well with a diverse group of co-workers in order to fulfill duties successfully; also interact well with the student, staff and faculty community.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to consider the most effective set-up for the needs of the event.
  • Ability to converse with customers for feedback about meal satisfaction.
  • Must have a positive attitude and great customer service skills to guests and team members alike.
  • Must be friendly and have excellent customer service skills.
  • Must be able to bend, stoop and stand for long periods.
  • Awareness of the importance of sanitation standards for food safety.
  • Ability to drive the catering van and electric cart to local off-campus events as needed.
  • Ability to work overtime, evenings, weekends, holidays and long shifts as needed.
  • Must ensure workstation is safe and free from hazards.
  • Ensure compliance with safety rules and regulations, proper use of personal safety equipment, food preparation equipment, and cleaning compounds.

Basic Qualification : Graduation from high school or any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must have at least two years of related experience in food service. Must have 1 year of experience in catering operations.

Licenses/Certificat ions : Must have a valid California Food Handlers Permit. Must have and maintain a valid drivers license and a driving record acceptable to the Colleges insurer.

Supervisory Responsibility : None

Time Type: Full-time 40 hours per week

Annual Pay Schedule: 10-month

Work Schedule : This full-time position works 40 hours per week over 10 months per year from August to May annually. The 40 hours are assigned from Saturday to Friday, 6:00 am to 9:00 pm when classes are in session, but may vary due to the needs of the department or College. Work will include nights, weekends and holidays. Work schedules may vary due to the needs of the College or department, and it is the employees responsibility to check the assigned schedule on a weekly basis.

Work Model : On-Campus

Compensation: Union contract rate of pay is $25.83 per hour

Physical Requirements : This is a very active position. Must be able to stand, walk, bend, climb, push, pull, stoop, twist, stretch, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds from ground to waist level without assistance. Must be able to work on feet for prolonged periods of time. Must have ability to grasp, grip and safely move and operate catering equipment and supplies. Must be able to lift and team-lift tables, chairs and other furniture as needed. Must have high energy and stamina to keep up with a fast-paced, time-sensitive, heavy workload and long work shifts as needed. Employment is contingent upon satisfactory results on a post-offer lift test.

Working Environment : Work is performed in a commercial kitchen and dining hall setting. Moderate to high noise levels. Hot and humid conditions. Limited temperature control. Certain areas may have tight workspaces. May occasionally work outdoors on varying types of surfaces (turf, gravel, concrete, etc.) for events and activities.
